Bernice Johanna Eyolfson (nee Einarson)
October 20, 1934 – November 29, 2021
Our hearts are saddened to announce the passing of our dear mother, amma, great-amma, Bernice Johanna Eyolfson. She passed quietly into the night November 29, 2021 at Gimli Community Health Center to the calling of God, Our Father. Mother’s life and memory will be cherished by her children, Elerd (Valerie), Brenda (Roy), David (Cathy), Lois (Joe), and Tanis; her grandchildren, Kyle (Rachel), Kurtis, Garrett (Megan), Hailey, Koen, and Kelsey; her great-grandchildren, Zion, Lyric and Lex. She is survived by her sister Sigga Helgason, brother in-law Raymond Ostertag, sister in-law Pat Eyolfson and many dear nieces and nephews.
Mother was predeceased by her husband Stoney, parents Clara and Elli Einarson, her step-father Mundi Halldorson, her brother Clarence (Mary), sister Begga (Kristjan) Johannesson, sister Ellen (Helgi) Sigurdson, sister Josie Ostertag, brothers-in-law Marino Helgason, Joe, Johnny, Lloyd, Stefan Eyolfson, sisters-in-law Jorunn Beck, Evelyn (Steve) Bjarnason, Thora Eyolfson, Louise (Walter) Charney, son-in-law Blake Thomson and mom’s dear friends Lois and Jack Rickett.
Mom was born October 20, 1934 to Clara and Elli Einarson of Hnausa, MB and grew up with her siblings Clarence, Sigga, Begga, Ellen and Josie. Fishing and mink farming was their family livelihood. Mom spoke fondly of her childhood as they all worked and played together. She attended school in Hnausa and met many of her life long friends there.
As a young adult she worked at Gimli Betel Home. She met Stoney and they married in 1954. They moved to Gimli, settled in South Beach and raised their family. Mother was always busy sewing, knitting, crocheting, cooking, baking, or painting. She enjoyed afternoon curling with her lady friends, as a 4H leader she shared her sewing and crafting skills with youth in our community, she also assisted in teaching children a little of the Icelandic language when she was asked. All her children loved when she made fresh bread especially brown bread, ponnukokurs, vinneterta (cookies) and kleinur (dipped in sugar). Mom’s joy in life came from the special bond she shared with all her grandchildren. They all have fond memories of time spent alone with their Amma. She would draw, color, read, do puzzles, play games, cars, bake, knitting classes, and often had a chair at the sink for her little helper (lots of bubbles). Many trips to the lake to play in the sand with trucks and shovels. Mom loved all her little angels and now we have our beautiful, kind, caring, special Angel Mom and Amma!
Thank you to Dr. Belloch and the staff of Gimli Community Health Centre for the care and kindness given to mom. There are things we don’t want to happen. But have to accept. Things we don’t know but have to learn and people we can’t live without but have to let go. As mother requested, cremation has taken place and a private family burial will be held. Donations in her name may be made to a charity of your choice.
