Albert Earl Hughson Friday June 4th 2021

It is with both sadness and thanksgiving that we announce the death of Albert (Al) Earl Hughson on Friday, June 4th, 2021 and his promotion to heaven. He will be welcomed by his loving wife Marnie (Marilyn Ruth nee Howard), his parents Elma May (nee Townsend) and Earl Lonsbury Hughson, and in-laws Elsie Mae (nee Carson) and Alan George Howard, as well as countless friends, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Al was born in Woodstock, ON on July 6, 1929. Growing up in Toronto, he was active in both church, school, music and athletic activities. As a young man Al worked at A&P and completed an apprenticeship in pharmacy. A colleague noticed Al’s gift for fixing things and making things work better, and suggested a career teaching Industrial Arts. Al entered Normal School, where he met his future bride, Marnie. After teaching in Ridgetown and back in Toronto, Al found his professional home at Northview Heights Secondary School, where he taught for the remainder of his career, rising to be head of the department, and forging lasting friendships. His true achievement was in the numerous lives he influenced with his faith and kind, caring approach.
Al lived in King City from 1959 to 2020. He was a member of All Saints Anglican Church in King, singing in the choir for many years. In recent years he enjoyed the excellent care and companionship of Riezel, and Arlene and Lino, who became ‘family’. Al spent the last nine months of his life as a vibrant part of the Amica Newmarket community. He will be missed by his dining buddies, exercise coach, caregivers and staff whose lives he touched.
Al passed his values and interests on to his children and grandchildren – love of the outdoors, the environment, trees and birds, love of travel across our great country, enjoyment of all kinds of music, choral singing, theatre, the arts, woodworking, fine craftsmanship, respect for all people and cultures, and most of all, his deep love for family and friends.
Though words can never fully describe Al, those who know him will remember his abiding love and care of his wife Marnie; his delightful sense of humour; bear hugs that took your breath away; laughter that filled the room; delight in great conversation over a good cup of coffee; his wonderful stories; his fairness and endless patience; his firm handshake, the aroma of his pipe, and his beautiful baritone singing voice.
Al leaves behind his children Cathy (Earl) Rothery, Earl Hughson (Roselyn Meissner), Mary Hughson (James Surowiak), Kim Howard (Bruce Voogel), and grandchildren who loved and adored him: Jordan Rothery (Samantha Schleese), Korina Rothery (Georgy Kapustin) Alex Hughson (Sarah MacGregory), Brent and Laura Hughson, Caleb and Rachel Surowiak, Adam and Jacob Voogel, Nicola and Leisel Meissner. He will be missed by brother and sister-in-law Paul and Darlene Howard, nephews Christopher (Dolly) Howard (Henrik and Viggo) and Reid (Rachel) Howard , Ross (Linda) Hughson, and nieces Donna (Bill) Andrus (Stephen, Cathy and families) and Gillian McMaster (Caleb and Sierra Yager). Predeceased by brothers John Hughson and Carson Howard.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Randall for his excellent care and friendship, Haider and the staff at Guardian Pharmacy – King, and the doctors, nurses and staff at Southlake Hospital, Newmarket for their care and compassion.
The family invites you to join the live stream service on Friday, June 11th at 1 pm (as per public health guidelines). We plan to hold a Memorial party in the future to celebrate Al’s life with family and friends. As you may recall, Al never said goodbye. It was always «bye for now». His last word was «Celebrate».
Donations in Al’s memory may be made to his favoured charities: Doctors Without Borders, The Salvation Army and The War Amps.
Arrangements, live stream link and book of condolences entrusted to Roadhouse and Rose, Newmarket ON.
A video tribute featuring photos and some of Al’s favorite music will begin at 12:45 p.m. on Friday, June 11 and the funeral service will begin at 1 p.m..
