On the evening of Saturday November 6th, after doing one of his favourite things, having a meal out, Allan Gibbons suddenly passed away. Al leaves behind his daughter Justine Loader (Leo Sammon) of Renfrew, who he was always sure to visit especially on special occasions as he would never miss an opportunity for a good home cooked meal. We all know that he loved his mashed potatoes and gravy! Al’s true pride was his grandchildren and anyone that would give him a moment to share would hear just how remarkable they are. Tyson Parker (Kelsey) of Cobden, Victoria Parker (Cardiff, Wales), Tatum Loader of Renfrew, Jake Sammon of Ottawa and Taitum Sammon (Nick) of Renfrew. Papa always got such a kick out of Tyson’s antics as a small boy who was full of vim and vigour and beamed with pride at his successes early on in life. He was thoroughly impressed that Tori had decided to go abroad to complete her Post Graduate Teacher’s Certificate and was fascinated that Tatum could make 3-point shots at her basketball games.
Al was predeceased by both of his parents Benjamin Gibbons and Beaulah Brooks and his youngest sister Mary Stewart.
Those who knew dad also knew that he loved to eat a good meal and lots of it. Dad will be remembered for his great love of hockey and all of the random hockey statistics that only he could care about so much (and also maybe a little annoyed if someone else didn’t share the same love as he did for the game). From a very early age and despite some adversity dad played hockey and then went on to coach and manage teams. One of his life’s highlights was taking a team all the way to the Allan Cup. Those who knew dad will also remember his natural ability to construct anything from wood whether it be a full home or a smaller woodworking project such as his last project making his youngest granddaughter a keepsake jewellery box for her 16th birthday. Dad would go to no expense whether his own or maybe someone else’s to ensure the project was nothing but the finest end product.
Although in later years they chose to live separately, Al’s love for Cynthia (Petrolia) was never ending. Together Al and Cynthia moved to Bancroft in the early 90’s with thoughts of it being a perfect retirement location. While together in Bancroft Nana and Papa had their very special granddaughter Lauren stay with them for an extended period of time. This is the time that you saw the true love and patience that Papa had for his grandkids when they were small.
In the last several years an incredibly selfless friend Peter Brownson had dad stay with him and watched out for him daily. Peter’s patience for dad was something only Peter could have and for this I will be forever grateful.
Sharon Meek (Bill) of Beachville, Al’s oldest sister and brother-in-law also hold many memories of Dad, from their childhood and also later in life when Dad helped renovate their heritage farmhouse. Uncle Buck’s stories will live on through our family and he will be deeply missed by brother-in-law Bob Stewart, friends, extended family, nieces and nephews.
