Porteous, William Benning ‘Bill’
After a brief illness at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, October 28th, 2020 Bill Porteous in his 89th year. Loving husband of the late Doris Warren and the late Diane Villeneuve. Lovingly remembered by Pattie (Gary Shultz), Jeff Porteous, Steve (Ruth) Porteous, Karon (Steve Kanellakos) and Paul (Sarah) Hart. A proud Grampa to Rebecca (Julien), Jenna (Patrick), Katie, Jennifer (Matt), Greg (Christine), Sarah, Stephanie, Frank, Nikki, Michael, Jackson, the late Michael Porteous and his great-grandchildren. He will be missed by his extended family and his many special friends. Son of the late Wilfred and Lorena Porteous. Dear brother of the late Dorothy (late Vic Kennedy), Lois (late Hugh McMaster), and Roy Porteous (Kay). Bill was the co-owner of W.J. Porteous & Sons Foodliner, a 3rd generation family business in Vernon. He enjoyed working in the store, at the post office, and in the catering business. As a charter member of the Metcalfe and District Lion Club, Bill was active for six decades involved in community events, fundraising and the canteen at the Metcalfe Fair. He was a founding member of the Carleton Golf and Yacht Club, a member of the Metcalfe Curling Club, and Chair of the Winchester District Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. Bill was an avid Ottawa Rough Riders and Ottawa Red Blacks Football fan, holding seasons tickets for many years. He loved spending his summers at the cottage on the Rideau and his winters in Lakeland, Florida. Thank you to the Med/Surg unit at WDMH, the Doctors, Nurses, and staff for their compassionate support, and to Dr. Merrett for his ongoing care. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the family will have a private gathering and a memorial will be held at a later date.
