The family of William (Bill) Sydney Palen are sad to announce his passing on Thursday April 23, 2020 after a long struggle with heart disease. Bill was born in Brandon July 19, 1946 to Hugh and Margaret Palen of Carberry.
Bill was predeceased by his wife Pearl, son Donald, his parents, brothers Alex, Wesley, Dwight, Fred and sister Ann.
He is survived by daughters Tammy and Trina (Allan), grandsons Randy, Ryan, Wesley (Samantha), and Devon, along with great grand-daughters Keyaira, Arianna, Averi-Grace, Emma and great-grandsons Skyler and Zander. He is also survived by his brothers Ken, Hugh (Candice) and Alan. Sisters Louise, Margaret, and Kathleen (Jan).
Bill grew up in Carberry helping out before and after school at the family owned business The Carberry Egg Grading Station and Poultry Processing Plant.
Bill and Pearl were long-time residents of Winnipeg where Bill worked for Porex driving heavy duty equipment and Concrete Batcher. He never lost his love of the Carberry area and would return there as often as he could to spend time with his mom and visit with his second family the Quinn’s of Harte. He had an interest in mechanics and treasured the knowledge that he gained on the machinery at the Quinn family farm and under the careful tutorage of Grandpa Carmichael. He looked forward each year to the fall when he and a brother or two –plus the dog in tow would head out to Carberry to hunt for ducks and deer.
Bill was someone who enjoyed family – staying in touch through phone calls and visits with his extended family of aunts, cousins and many nieces and nephews. He had an infectious manner that drew people to him. He often showed a gruff exterior but underneath there was a heart of gold.
Bill had a sense of humour and enjoyed playing tricks on the kids. He loved family gatherings and having everyone over for Sunday BBQs. He was always there to help out and lend a helping hand to others whenever it was needed. Bill had many friends. After he retired they enjoyed many coffee runs together catching up on all the gossip.
A loving and caring man, we all will miss him dearly.
Cremation has taken place and a private burial at the Carberry Cemetery will take place at a later date.
