Obituary for Todd Thompson
It is with profound sadness that Todd’s family announces the sudden passing of Todd at home in Ottawa on November 10, 2020, at the age of 50. Todd was born and spent his childhood years on the family farm in Petrolia. Todd is loved by his mother, Carol Thompson (nee Sylvester), his brother , Wayne (Bonnie) Thompson, and his partner Jennifer Baker.
He will also be missed by many aunts, uncles and cousins, especially his Aunt Jane. Todd was predeceased by his father, Douglas (1995), grandparents William and Helen (Napper) Thompson and William and Stella Sylvester.
Todd achieved his goal of owning a financial business as co-owner of Trio Financial Planning. With his traveller’s spirit, Todd spent time in Australia and New Zealand before settling in Ottawa, where he received his university degree. He crossed Canada in his travels, and recently toured Ireland and Scotland with his fiddle in hand always ready for a tune. Never a fan of children, Todd, spent the past sixteen years, as an unlikely, but loving (and much loved) uncle (by friendship) to Liam, Connor and Brynn Watson. Todd was a lover of Christmas, he even convinced his mother to sew a Santa suit for him that he enjoyed with many kids; and family knew he could be the world’s super snoop in tracking down his Christmas gifts. An avid golfer with members of the Metcalfe Golf Course men’ s league, for almost fifteen years, Todd will be remembered for his sharp wit, brilliant smile and big heart. A calm soul, Todd relished the chance to get away from it all and spend time camping and cottaging with friends and family. Todd’s infectious personality, accompanied by a warm smile and wicked sense of humour gained him many friends.
HOCKEY FANS, HERE HE COMES!! For many years Todd and Jen enjoyed attending Senator games and everything in the Ottawa household came to a halt on game night. In his competitive spirit, Todd was ever faithful to the Ottawa Senators and especially disappointed if they lost to Toronto Maple Leafs ( his brother’s forever favourite). He ran a hockey pool for many years.
Todd’s passion was his fiddle; playing, competing in contests and teaching for many years as a teenager and into adulthood. Early on when first in Ottawa, as the fiddle player, he was a proud member of the band “UP ALL NIGHT”. For several years, Todd directed the Grand Masters Fiddle Organization (nationwide) in financial and corporate endeavors thus developing friendships with fiddlers across Canada.
Todd never forgot his roots, always returning to Petrolia to family for the many enjoyable celebrations and gracious social events planned by his Mother and brother on the family farm. As best friends,Todd shared a passion with Wayne, inherited from their father, for working with wood. Despite the distance, Todd, Carol, and, Wayne, always maintained contact though daily telephone conversations. While in Petrolia, he was constantly renewing old friendships with former school classmates.
Arrangements are incomplete at this time. Interment will be in Hillsdale Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to your local Humane Society or the Grand Masters Fiddle Association through their website.
