THOMSON George Wilfred December 18 1926 — November 22 2020

THOMSON, George Wilfred
December 18, 1926 — November 22, 2020
It is with great sadness that the family of George Wilfred Thomson announce his passing on November 22, 2020, in Kelowna B.C. George was born on December 18, 1926 in Moose Jaw, SK to Arthur and Esther Thomson. He was predeceased by his parents, nine siblings and by his six-year-old daughter, Jennifer Lee Thomson. He was the last of his generation.
George is survived by his wife Maryanne Edwards, who was his best friend and partner for 30 years; his children and their partners, Drake Thomson of Saskatoon, SK, Deborah and Kim McCaig of Calgary, AB, Guy Thomson and Kristl Renaux of Belgium, and Suzanne and Dan Decker of Saskatoon; grandchildren Matthew McCaig (Christine), Kendall Quantz (Steven), Michael McCaig (Marie-Claude), Xavier Thomson (Liza), Alexander Thomson, and Kate Thomson; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his stepdaughter Candace Edwards and his step-grandchildren Lucas Daoust and Benjamin Ellsworth.
George served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the latter part of the Second World War. After the war, he worked for many years for Trans Canada Airlines (now Air Canada) before moving on to P. Lawson Travel in Saskatoon. George pioneered the charter travel industry in Canada by creating the first privately chartered tours, starting with the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation and branching out from there. He was extremely well-travelled and delighted in regaling people with tales of his adventures – always mixed with his own brand of humour and jest. In retirement, George volunteered with Meals on Wheels, the SPCA, and helped disabled children learn to ride horses. He loved to keep abreast of world affairs, right up until his final days.
George was fortunate to have been able to spend his last years at home with his wife Maryanne at his side. This would not have been possible without the help of Veterans Affairs Canada and BC Interior Health, who provided them with the support they required. His family is very grateful for their assistance.
