Obituary
THOMAS CLIFFORD HAYWARD
November 30, 1933 – December 30, 2019
It is with deep sorrow our family announces the peaceful passing of Tom from complications of Parkinson’s disease at the St. Boniface Hospital on Monday, December 30, 2019 at the age of 86.
He was predeceased by his parents Edward and Nora Hayward. Tom will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years Gladys, their children Shirley, Chris and Dianne (Bud) Hay, five grandchildren Shane, Jessica, Stephanie, Kayla and Geordie. Tom is also survived by his only sibling Noreen (Les, late) Everton and their families. Extended in-law families of Muriel (Reg, late) Haddad, Gordon and (Karin) McAulay, Audrey (Steve) Robson, Allan McAulay (late) and their families.
Tom lived all his life in Transcona, spending summer holidays at Ottermere Lake, Ontario with family and friends. Tom loved nature, boating and snowmobiling. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed watching all the Bombers, Blue Jays, Jets and curling games. Tom was a quiet, kind, soft spoken man of few words.
Tom and Gladys met in March 1956 through mutual friends at the Transcona mixed curling bonspiel and later married on May 10, 1958.
Tom began employment with the CNR on July 11, 1952. He always said “If you enjoy what you do, it’s not work”. He retired from the CNR as a locomotive engineer in 1989, after 37 years of service, at the age of 55, and enjoyed 30 years of retirement. He fulfilled his dream of building their log cabin of at Ottermere in 1980.
Tom was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2008. He was able to continue living a full life until the last few years as the disease progressed, slowly taking from him small bits of his mobility and independence. He never complained. He was strong in his fight and accepted each setback as the disease progressed. He will be remembered for his good deeds and kindness. He has left us with many treasured memories.
