Obituary for Thomas Gray Smith
December 4, 1957 – April 8, 2020
Thomas (Tom/Tommy) Gray Smith passed away peacefully on April 8, 2020 at GF Strong Hospital in Vancouver, BC at the age of 62 after a 15 month battle with lung cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Maria Smith, his daughter, Melissa Smith (husband Ramon Perez Cruz), son, Thomas J. Smith (wife Maggie Smith, children Jamie and Tommy). He will be greatly missed by his four siblings, Betty Gilbert, Helen Campbell, James Smith and Jim Matson, along with his nieces, nephews and all extended family, and many friends and colleagues whom he met over the years. Tom is predeceased by his parents James (Jim) and Marina Smith.
Tom was born at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver. His parents settled in East Vancouver from their native country of Scotland. Tom attended Grandview Elementary and Britannia Secondary (8J-9J). He worked 32 years with Canada Post, most recently working as a Heavy Vehicle Operator.
Tom had many passions including the outdoors and nature, but more specifically camping, fishing and hot springs’, riding his motorcycles and collecting model cars. He loved to explore; we know he was keen to travel the world more than he did. He often spoke about his visits to Scotland and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico at a younger age, and particularly enjoyed a trip to his wife’s home country of Peru in Dec 2015 – Jan 2016 with Maria and Melissa, including a multi-day trip to Cusco and Machu Picchu.
He was a caring and generous husband, father, uncle, grandfather, friend, neighbour and colleague. Tom was always lending a helping hand. He was always laughing and smiling, and thoroughly enjoyed a good prank. Tom will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
A private family viewing was held at Amherst Mortuary Service Centre on April 13, 2020. We plan to have a memorial service and celebration of life later in 2020, if possible.
