It is with great sadness that the family of the late Sylvia Mae (Matheson) Shaw, 93, of Lunenburg, announces her passing on Monday, September 28, 2020 at Heart to Heart Home Care in Marriott’s Cove.
Born in Stellarton, Sylvia was the daughter of the late James and Ruby (Fleck) Matheson.
Sylvia received her early education in Stellarton and following the war went on to achieve her B.A. and B.Ed. certificate from Acadia University, Wolfville. She started her teaching career in Liverpool and Dartmouth and then went on to teach for many years at Centre Consolidated School until her retirement in 1986. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.
She was a faithful member of Central United Church, Lunenburg, where she was Clerk of Session, served as a member of Unit 2 of the U.C.W and sang in the choir, which nurtured her life-long passion for singing and music. A sports enthusiast in her earlier years she played softball and hockey and was Past President of the Ladies Division of the Bluenose Golf Club.
Over the years, Sylvia was involved in CGIT for the School for the Blind in Halifax and for 30 years volunteered with the Pastoral Care Team for Harbour View Haven Home for Special Care, Lunenburg.
Sylvia is survived by her daughters, Dianne Shaw MacAdam, Halifax; Katherine Claire Shaw Beckwith, Blockhouse; son, Robert (Anne) Shaw, Bedford; grandchildren, Connor, Bhreagh, Karen, Wendy and great-grandchildren, Emma, Sadie, Hunter, Aidan, Seth, Benjamin, James and Peter.
Besides her parents, Sylvia was predeceased by her husband, Capt. Charles Alfred Shaw and brothers, Donald, John and Harry and son-in-law, Charles “Skip” Beckwith.
Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. A graveside memorial service to celebrate Sylvia’s life will be held Saturday, Oct 3, at 2:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg, Rev. Grace Caines-Corkum officiating.
