Obituary
Steve Tomchuk
Sadness is in our hearts as we announce the passing of Steve Tomchuk, brother, uncle and friend, at the Tudor House Personal Care Facility in Selkirk, Manitoba, on Thursday, August 27th, 2020, at the age of 95.
Steve was predeceased by his father Peter, mother Stephanie, brother Nick, sister-in-law Nellie and brother-in-law Tony. He is survived by his sister Nettie Kostiniuk, niece, Darcie (Tom) Watson, nephew, Randall Tomczuk, nephew, Terry (Sandra) Kostiniuk, niece Gail Tomczuk, and grand nieces, Breanne and Shayla Kostiniuk.
Steve was born in Walkleyburg, Manitoba on December 26, 1924. He attended Brightstar School in his early grades. Both Steve and his brother Nick were a team to reckon with on the baseball field, as Steve was the catcher and Nick was the pitcher. At an early age, Steve was already business minded. He had a job at the school in the fall and winter months, starting the wood stove up to ensure the building would be warm when the teacher and the rest of the kids arrived. Like a lot of children in Steve’s era, they left school and were needed to help with the farm operations. Steve walked many a mile, bringing the cows home for milking and tending to splitting wood, picking garden vegetables and helping wherever needed. Steve grew an itch to travel and left home in the late 1940’s to experience different jobs along the way, some of which included working at a mine, working on a thrashing machine crew and in bush camps. His travels took him to Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.
Once Steve settled down, his passion became farming. He farmed for many years in Walkleyburg, growing cereal crops. He grew russet potatoes to sell at a restaurant in Winnipeg, was his own mechanic and carpenter, building his own home in 1960 and building furniture. Steve worked hard and also enjoyed the Saturday night outings to Club 13 and the German Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Steve was also fond of playing crib and checkers with friends and family.
Family was very important to Steve. As he never married, family gatherings for Christmas, Easter, Birthdays were always special. Many memories were made and were cherished throughout the years.
In 2013, Steve ended up in hospital and was not able to return to his home place. He moved into an apartment in Beausejour where he spent 6 ½ years, and then moved to Tudor House in Selkirk, Manitoba.
The family would like to thank the Home Care Staff and Case Workers from the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority for all their care and compassion during Steve’s stay in the Beausejour area. Thank you to Dr. Hessie Sookermany-Loeppky for her care and compassion and to the Staff at Tudor House Personal Care Facility for all their care and compassion during Steve’s stay.
As per Steve’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a Graveside Service will take place on Friday, September 4th, 2020 at 10:00 A.M., at the Brookside Cemetery in the R. M. of St. Clements, Road 82 North, between Road 32 East and Road 33 East. All are welcome.
There will be no luncheon due to COVID-19 regulations, and the family would ask that if you are attending, to please respect social distancing and to wear a mask, if you so choose. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
Condolences may be left on his tribute wall at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
