Obituary
STEFANIE JAMIE MCKAY
On Christmas Eve, December 24, 2020, the star of Bethlehem took Stefanie Jamie McKay home. Stefanie was born in Calgary, Ab on Feb 18, 1990 to Lenny and Helen McKay. She moved to Winnipeg as a baby. She became the foster daughter of Stanton and Nadine Richards in 1995. She was raised in Selkirk, graduating from Lord Selkirk Regional High School in 2009. She studied Hospitality and Tourism Management at Red River College. When her health permitted she would work in the service industry a job she truly enjoyed. Steffie had a great love for animals and it didn’t matter what kind. She volunteered at Pawed Pals Animal Rescue Reserve in Selkirk. A job she found great joy in.
Steffie at the age of five she had a liver transplant in Ontario. The last few years Steffie suffered a lot of health issues because of this. She became a well-known face in the hospitals. The staff in Selkirk would greet her “S’up Stef?” She had her ‘Gold Team’ of doctors at the Health Science Center in Winnipeg but all this couldn’t save her from Covid. She went in for surgery on Dec. 2 and was diagnosed with covid Dec. 10, 2020 which she contracted from the hospital. Steffie’s last post to her Facebook said, “For the past few years I’ve been Struggling with Horrible Abdominal Pain. It gets Sooo bad that I’ve been getting admitted almost every month for five to as long as 30 days. Finally found out I had an obstruction and last month the specialist said it’s getting so bad that they said they need to operate as soon as they can. Today I’m hopefully getting the obstruction finally fixed. Terrified but Excited at the same time.”
Steffie was predeceased by her father, Lenny George McKay. Two foster brothers, Maurice and Norman Richards and one foster sister, Ruth Ann Harris. Steffie is survived by her mother, Helen McKay, four brothers Marc, Dwayne, Eddy and Lenny Jr. McKay and one sister Jestine McKay. Steffie is also survived by her foster parents, Stanton and Nadine Richards, foster brothers, David (Elaine) Laire, Gary and Aaron Richards, brother-in-law Phil Harris, foster sisters Marianne (Terry) Sarich and Shyanne Williams. Besides numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews Steffie is survived by her bestie friend Jackie McCartan and many other friends.
Steffie always said she’d be, “Forever Young” and she will always be forever young in our hearts. We will truly miss you our little daughter, sister and friend.
