SHEILA MARGARET TIMMINS (BROOKS)
January 14, 1934 – March 3, 2020
Peacefully, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s, Sheila passed away at Extendicare, Kirkland Lake, in her 87th year. Beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother. Born in Cobalt, Ontario, Sheila was the daughter of the late Reginald and Lottie Brooks. Predeceased by her husband, William (Bill) Allen Timmins in 2010, her brother William (Bill) Brooks in 1996, and her great-granddaughter, Hannah Harlow-Maillet in 2018.
Sheila is survived by her brother Walter (Maxine) Brooks; her children Kathryn (Robert) Leach, Peter (Katharine) Timmins, Susan (Jim) Sigal, Ken (Katie Walker) Timmins, and Steven Timmins; her grandchildren Matthew Timmins, Michael (Julia Clark) Timmins, Shane (Tasha) Cowell, Kirsten (Anthony) Zadow, Erin Sigal, Victoria Leach, Jennifer Leach and Murray Leach; and great-grandchildren Nicholas Maillet, Tanyon Cowell, Elliot Zadow and Holden Cowell. Sheila will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews.
Sheila graduated from high school in Schumacher, Ontario and attended Normal School in North Bay, Ontario. Her teaching career began at Queen Elizabeth Public School in Kirkland Lake, Ontario where she met and married Bill in 1954.
Sheila’s passion was music. In earlier years she taught music in the public school system. She was so proud of her choirs who were entered in the Kiwanis Music Festival every year, and always did well. She started playing the piano for Federal United Church in Kirkland Lake many years ago and quickly formed a choir there as well. When the Federal Church closed, Sheila attended Trinity United Church and was a member of the choir there. She also was in “Just Friends,” a ladies’ singing group in Kirkland Lake where she enjoyed both the music and the social aspect of this close-knit group.
Sheila accompanied the Interlink choir on the piano for many years which involved Grade 5 students and senior citizens who came together weekly throughout the year and then performed a Spring Concert at Northern College. Together Sheila’s friends, Erma Hill and Margaret McCrank ran this program.
Later in life, Sheila volunteered at Extendicare and Teck Pioneer Residence playing the piano and entertaining the residents at everything from birthday parties to Canada Day celebrations.
We would like to especially extend our heartfelt thanks to the healthcare providers at Extendicare Kirkland Lake for the kind, compassionate and dignified care they provided to Sheila over the years, particularly in the last difficult months.
At Sheila’s request, cremation has taken place.
VISITATION:
A visitation will be held on Friday, September 25 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Trinity United Church followed by a private family funeral at 2:30 p.m.
