SHAMAS, Sheila Dorothy (nee Casson)
August 12, 1926 – June 16, 2020
After a lovely day outside gardening our beloved mother passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at Golden Birches Terrace. She passed suddenly while instructing one of her caregivers how to make a peach pie. After a full and well lived life, she will be dearly missed by her children Tom (Diane), Dr. Mary Shamas and John (Shelley). Nana of Allison of Vancouver, James of Guelph and Karli and Andrew both of Blind River; sister of Dr. Bryn Casson (Ann), sister in law of Nell Maxwell (the late Ted) and Jim Shamas. Fondly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Predeceased by her husband Abraham “A.J” Shamas, her brother Adam Casson (the late June), her sister June Marie Eadie (the late Don), her parents Samuel Adam and Edna Casson and her step mother Ann Casson.
Mom graduated from St. Joseph’s of North Bay as a Registered Nurse in January of 1947. Her profession eventually led her to Blind River where she worked at the local hospital. There she met her future husband A.J. Shamas and in 1953 they were married. Together they started their family and their business, A.J. Bus Lines. Mom worked in the family business, even drove the buses, but her real passion was her horses, her family, her home and her pets.
Mom was an accomplished cook, seamstress and quilter who had a tremendous flare for fashion and style. Her and dad were happiest sharing their home with family and friends over a nice dinner. She especially enjoyed the company of her sister June and her closest friends. She had a great sense of humour and was so very witty. She was an avid curler with an “8 ender” being the highlight of her curling career.
As a young girl Mom saved her money and bought her first horse. Her love for this majestic animal and her involvement with them continued for the rest of her life. She affectionately became known as “tall in the saddle” by one of her dear friends.
Mom was passionate about and devoted to all of her endeavours. Kind hearted, thoughtful, generous, caring and always grateful. She lived a wonderful, full and long life that was enriched by her family and friends. She will be dearly missed by all.
In the last few years of Mom’s life, she required assistance in her home. The family would like to thank her personal care workers who lovingly and patiently cared for her. It was our honour and privilege to have you care for our mother, we are forever grateful. We’d also like to thank the care givers at Golden Birches Terrace. It gave us piece of mind knowing our mother was happy, comfortable and well cared for.
