Ronald Joseph Matwey passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2020 surrounded by his loving family at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. He was born in Toronto to parents Stephen and Sophie Matwey on January 26, 1934. Ron’s lifelong passion for aviation began flying bush planes in his youth. In 1956, he started his career with Air Canada, where he met his beloved wife of 54 years, Dorothy Jean Cameron, a former flight attendant whom he married on April 24,1965. He retired as a captain of the 747 jumbo jet after thirty-seven years.
He is survived by wife Dorothy, daughters Melinda, Heather, and Jennifer, granddaughters Natasha and Veronica, great-grandchildren Taylor and Jameson, his sister Theodora, and his many nieces and nephews. He now joins his beloved grandson Matthew, sisters Lyola and Marie, brothers Stephen and Kenneth, and his parents.
Ron was a devoted Roman Catholic, whose faith carried him throughout his life. His boundless benevolence and altruistic spirit were reflected in his regular contributions to his church and numerous charities throughout his life and unlimited generosity towards his friends and family. He was cherished by everyone for his incredible warmth and sharp wit. He will be remembered by many through his great conversations and lifetime of stories, always enriched by his incomparable sense of humour.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday February 11th from 2 – 4pm and 7 – 9pm at Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home in Oakville, 64 Lakeshore Rd W (one block east of Kerr St) Funeral mass will be held at 11am at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Oakville followed by his burial at Holy Family Catholic Cemetery and a celebration of life at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Oakville.
The family is deeply thankful to the staff at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for taking care of their father. Donations may be made to Toronto Sick Kids Hospital or Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.
Captain Ron, may you soar through the rooms of the heavenly skies for all of eternity. Poppa, you finally got your wings
