Robert John Acorn of Glenboro, passed away peacefully at the Glenboro Personal Care Home on Monday, August 17th, 2020, at the age of 100.
“Bob” was born in Dunrea, Manitoba to the late Fred and Mary (Spurrill) Acorn. Beloved husband of 78 years to Doreen (Myers) and father to Helen Maloney (George), Vern (Kathy), Brent (Gerri), Jo Ann Doughart (Ian). Predeceased by his parents and siblings Dorothy, Bill, Gladys and Ted, his son Vern and son-in-law George. Bob was a grandfather to 8 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 12 great great grandchildren, and 1 great great great grandchild and was also a cousin, uncle and brother-in-law to a large extended family.
At age five, Bob moved with his parents to a farm near Strathcona Park and attended Belmont school. For several years he attended classes and then drove a horse-drawn school van. He loved to tell stories of the rough, treacherous conditions and mishaps he and other students experienced while travelling to and from school.
Before marrying Doreen, Bob worked on a local farm and “rode the rails” to Western Canada to help with the harvest there. He returned when his father passed away, to help his mother and brother on their home farm. Bob and Doreen began their married life on the home farm and moved to another farm known as the “Kinley place” in 1943. Clearing and farming the land and fixing and adding to buildings there was back-breaking work over the years, but they made the best of it. In 1982, after raising their family and selling the land, they retired to a quieter life in the village of Belmont and in later years to Glenboro. Bob enjoyed playing cards, fishing, golfing and traveling in his retirement years.
A Private Graveside Service will be held on Thursday August 20, 2020 at the Hillside Cemetery with Sharon Hamilton officiating. Memorial donations can be made in Bob’s memory to the Glenboro & Area Foundation, Box 147, Glenboro MB R0K 0X0 or to the Hillside Cemetery Fund, Box 100, Belmont MB R0K 0C0 or to a charity of choice.
