Obituary for Robert Allister «Al» Yates
June 28, 1953-April 14, 2020
It is with very heavy hearts to announce the passing of Robert Allister “Al” Yates,he was 66 years old. After a year long courageous battle with lung cancer, the Lord took Al home on April 14,2020 where he died at his place of residence with his cousin Wayne and his beloved cat Gunther by his side.
Al was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia where he was the eldest of 7 children. Son of Theresa Yates and of the late David Yates. Al moved to Oshawa, Ontario where he had lived for the past 30 years. Al was a handy man of sorts. He loved masonry work, worked for the city, and did small home renovations. He loved buying, fixing up and selling vehicles as well. Al’s bright blue eyes and smile charmed everyone who knew him and charmed those who did not. He was always making the people around him laugh with a good joke. Al always took pride in taking care of his family, especially his mother Theresa and his daughter Lyndsey. His proudest moments were walking his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day and becoming a grandfather.Al loved to travel, dine out, watch movies and TV, entertain, have a drink or two, play the guitar, enjoyed a variety of music, playing a game of golf with his friend Ted and always had a good eye for that “perfect” shirt that always had to have two pockets. Al loved to go on road trips as he frequently would drive out East to spend time with his family. Al was a soft, generous, kind-hearted spirit that will forever be missed and mourned deeply.
Al is survived by his loving daughter Lyndsey (Johnny) Johnson, his sweet and only granddaughter Jordyn Ann Mae, his mother Theresa; brothers Brian, Derek, Bradley and sister Beverley; niece Brittany (Jordan); nephews Brandon and Cody; grand nieces Camryn and Kinsley. Al is also survived by his cousin Wayne (Sandra), Aunt Caroland very caring friends Janice,Ted, Tammy and Suzanne.
Al is predeceased by his girlfriend Joy Hann, father David Yates, his brothers Lorne and Cash, and grandparents Mary and Jimmy Doyle, Annie and Harry Yates.
Al’s wishes were to be cremated and returned home to Glace Bay, Nova Scotia to be buried beside his brother Cash. Cremation arrangements have been made by After Care Oshawa. A small grave side service will be held at a later date. Al will be celebrated by friends and family near and far in classic Al fashion-with a good tune and a cold drink.
Heartfelt gratitude to his close circle of friends who gathered around Al and took care of him this past year and during the last couple months of his life. Thank you, Brandon, for taking Al out East one last time in February so that he could say goodbye to his mother. Lastly, thank you to all the health care professionals who supported Al during his journey with cancer.
