Obituary for
Reginald Carmon Gilstorf
August 3, 1923 – July 29, 2020
‘A LIFE LONG – LIVED, WELL- LIVED, MUCH – LOVED’
A true gentleman…truly a gentle man, Reg passed away peacefully in the compassionate embrace of St.Patrick’s Home, Ottawa, his “home” for the past six months.
Beloved stepfather of Kathy Ullrich (Ottawa, On.) and Colleen Early (Bradford, On.). Proud grandpa of Maren Ullrich (Sean Corcoran), Brooklyn, N.Y., Heather Schulz (Heath), Horsham, Australia and Spencer Hall (Leah), Toronto, On. Great-grandpa of Mavis and Miles (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Evie and Greta (Horsham, Australia) and Oscar (Toronto, On.).
Reg is survived by his loving sister Ruby Craigen (Don) Regina, Sask. and several nieces and nephews. He is fondly remembered by Spencer and Jan Early, Andrea Granberg and John Early of Saskatoon, Sask.
Reg was predeceased by his parents Charles and Jennie Gilstorf, brothers Laverne, Wesley, Raymond, his beloved wife Eve, son-in-law Peter Ullrich and grandson Shawn Ullrich.
Born and raised in Aylesbury, Sask. Reg and siblings lived on the family farm until adulthood. Upon completion of rural school, Reg decided on a military career, graduating as an Officer with the RCAF just prior to the end of the Second World War. Since active duty overseas was no longer an option, Reg headed to the University of Saskatchewan to pursue his academic interests, obtaining a B.SC. in Agriculture and a Master’s Degree in Economics. Before long he was offered a position with the Federal Government and thus began a lengthy, rewarding career in Ottawa. When he met and eventually married Eve, a single mom with two daughters, Reg became a caring and patient stepdad.
Reg’s farm upbringing contributed to the strong work ethic highly evident throughout his life. He also displayed a competitive side related to sports/games, particularly golf and curling! He enjoyed all aspects of life and maintained a genuine curiosity about the world around him. After Eve passed away, an adventurous spirit emerged in Reg and he embarked on cruises and tours abroad, absorbing the history of places travelled.
Although a quiet, modest man, Reg exhibited an unexpected wit accompanied by a mischievous grin, which endeared him to people of all ages and stages! He was a devoted, longtime member of Carsonby United Church and for many years, an active member of Kiwanis Club of Sage.
On Reg’s behalf, family extends deep appreciation to Manotick Place Retirement Community where he enjoyed six years of comfort, camaraderie and care.
Cremation has taken place. At a later date, we hope to celebrate Reg’s remarkable 97year journey. In the meantime, please consider a memorial donation to Carsonby United Church, ℅ J Kearns, 27 Westerra Way, Kemptville, On. K0G-1J0 or to ROSSS (Rural Ottawa South Support Services), 1128 Mill St. Box 423, Manotick, On. K4M-1A4.
