After a long fight against cancer, our dear friend & brother Ray went home to Jesus. In Ray’s words, he ‘transitioned to heaven’ and he is now “on the other side of the veil” rejoicing to be reunited with his beautiful wife, Jan, and joining the throng gathered in worship and praise to the King of Kings!
Ray was born on May 1, 1946 in Paia Hospital, Paia, HI. He was the fourth son of Jacob Ten Sung Mau and Charlotte Kaloke Gibson. He is survived by two sons: Bruce Lamar Mau of Germany and Jason Thomas Mau of Oregon. He is also survived by three brothers and three sisters: Jacob R. Mau (Sharon) of Kula, HI, Richard H. Mau (Carla) of Reno, NV, Russell H. Mau of Pukalani, HI, Janice K. Baisa of Makawao, HI, Mililani Kiesling (Danie) of Wailuku, HI, and Noelani Cheeley (Rob) of Kula, HI.
Ray graduated from St. Anthony High School in 1964 and furthered his studies in Business Administration at Woodbury University in Burbank, CA. He was not able to complete his degree because he was drafted in to the Army and served four years.
Ray was gifted as a teacher, a public speaker and in leader development. He was employed in diverse occupations throughout his life. He was a limousine chauffeur in Hollywood, CA and was a favorite of Luciano Pavarotti and other stars. He worked for the US Federal Government at the Haleakala Observatory at the Institute of Astronomy as a computer technologist for a number of years on Maui, HI. Over the years 1975 – 1988, with a few moves to and from Hawaii, he studied at the University of the Nations Kona and later served as house parent with his first wife, Vicki, for young students. Later as an alumni he continued his involvement and ministry at U of N Kona after the break up of his marriage. He met Jan Chapman, from Victoria, BC, in 1987 and they married May 14, 1988. They were married and lived in Victoria for 31 years until Jan’s death from cancer in 2019. Ray became a Canadian citizen in November 1996. While living in Victoria, Ray worked for several ministries: Human Resources, Transportation, BC Human Rights Commission, and Ministry of the Attorney General. His job descriptions ranged from: planning analyst, marketing consultant, and staff development advisor. Both Ray & Jan had a heart for reconciliation and restoration ministry and traveled to the nation’s capitol as part of Victoria contingent whose aim was to encourage leaders to recognize the need to admit and make apology for past injustices to First Nations people in Canada. Ray also traveled to New Zealand with a team from Hawaii to meet with descendants of native Hawaiians who had brought the gospel to that land and to encourage the unity of the Pacific Islanders in their oneness under the One True God. He was also involved in a Hawaii statewide crusade led by Daniel Kikawa (author of Perpetuated in Righteousness and God of Light, God of Darkness ) on March14, 1998 where local Christians met at selected sites (temples or ‘heiau” known as sites of human sacrifice) and prayed at a specific hour praying and proclaiming the Power of God as greater than the power of evil and darkness and claiming the sacrifice and shed blood of Jesus to break the stronghold of Satan over Hawaii …prayers were answered and a mighty outpouring of blessing and miracles occurred. Such was Ray’s passion for the Kingdom of God.
Ray’s life verses were Jeremiah 29:11-13: “For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for prosperity and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.”
Ray has left a legacy most of us could only dream of. He has powerfully impacted so many people’s lives in his short time on earth. For those of you who have had the privilege of knowing Ray and of time with him, you will know this.
One of Ray’s recent passions was seeing the legacy of Jan live on.
