Phyllis Stonehouse
1916-2020
The family of Ms. Phyllis Vivian Stonehouse are deeply
saddened by her passing on January 23, 2020 at Glen Haven Manor, New
Glasgow. Born December 24, 1916 in Springhill, she was a daughter of
Roy and Irma Kirkpatrick (Tabor) Stonehouse. Phyllis devoted her whole
life in caring for her family wherever needed. She moved to New
Glasgow in 2000 where she resided until her passing at the age of 103
years. She was the last surviving member of her family. Phyllis lived
a normal life as a teenager, spending her time with friends. She never
married. She loved to read, do jigsaw puzzles, and very much enjoyed
playing records of her favourite singers, reading magazines of movie
stars, and finally, when TV came into being, she had the first one on
the block. During the Second World War, Phyllis worked in a Canadian
Air Force plant in Amherst, NS, for a short time. Following that
experience, she went back to the farm to help her grandmother,
separating the milk, preparing the cream for making butter, and
keeping the house in order. Her grandmother became ill, so Phyllis
stayed with her until she passed away. She returned to her home to
help look after her mother and father for a period of time. When her
mother suffered a stroke and was confined to bed, Phyllis looked after
her for eight years. Her father was her next patient until his health
failed and he passed away. When her own health became a problem, her
brothers convinced her to go to New Glasgow to live. She was happy
living in her apartment with no worries about looking after her home.
Being close to her family was a comfort to her. As her health
deteriorated, she had to enter a nursing home. She was active in all
activities and enjoyed her book of Lexicon. Phyllis enjoyed reaching
the milestone of her 100th birthday and was thankful to have
remembered so much. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Audrey
Stonehouse; nieces: Linda (Raymond) Grant, New Glasgow, NS, and
daughters Paula, Melanie and Holly; Betty (Joe) Cameron, New Glasgow,
PEI, and daughters Lisa, Trisha and Laurie; nephew: Grant (Pam)
Stonehouse, Halifax, NS and children D’Arcy and Aaron; plus
10 grandnieces and nephews. She is also survived by aunt, Dorothy
Tabor (Ian) Price, Middleton, NS. She was predeceased by her parents,
Roy and Irma Stonehouse; brothers: Ronald, Russell (Verna MacLeod),
Harold (Agnes Millard), two brothers in infancy, sister, Elsie. As per
Phyllis’ request, there will be no visitation or service. A
celebration of life will be held at a later date. Burial will be in
Pine Grove Cemetery, Oxford, at a later date. Donations in her memory
may be made to the SPCA or a charity of choice. Arrangements are under
the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. The family
would like to acknowledge the staff of Glen Haven Manor for the
excellent care and compassion Phyllis received during her stay there.
God bless.
