Eulogy of Pearle Lasko
Pearle Sernowski was born in Veregin, Sk. She met Mike when she was 16 and they were married 4 years later on October 16th, 1948. They moved to their own farm in the Arran area and farmed grain and cattle. Randy was born in 1950, when he was 4 years old, they moved to Regina.
She began working for the city of Regina cleaning and doing Arts and Crafts. Pearle loved doing ceramics, especially teaching classes in the basement of their home. There were many trips to Canora and Moose Jaw for supplies. After that, she worked at the Galleria, she even pierced Andrea’s ears!
Many of Pearle’s ceramic creations were displayed around her garden: bunnies, a family of turtles and many figurines. Pearle loved her garden and spent many hours tending to all the plants and flowers. She would spend all day out there, especially in the warm summer months It was her favorite place to be! She spared no expense to keep her garden looking magnificent, as she watered daily- you should have seen her water bill!!
Pearle loved her Roman Catholic faith and the church was so important to her. She attended mass faithfully on Sundays and watched the televised daily mass on Vision or EWTN. The animals loved it too, Buddy (dog) would howl when they sang “Allelulia” and Scooter (cat) would just watch. Pearle raved about Mother Angelica and prayed the Rosary with her too. When we were traveling or having a baby, Pearle would light a candle and pray a Rosary for us, she worried a lot and loved a lot.
Their Ukrainian Culture was something Pearle was very proud of, to the point where she would teach anyone who was listening. I learned a lot from Pearle, like the 12 meatless dishes for Christmas Eve supper and the significance of the items placed in the basket for the traditional Basket Blessing at Easter. You had to attend mass on Easter Sunday to share in the blessed food.
Food was always ready and available at their house. Some of Pearle’s specialties: borscht, noodle bake, egg drop soup, beet nicks, apple spice bread pudding and of course apple pie! She once made about 80 pies for a fundraiser, so Michael could attend World Youth Day. She would do anything for Michael, including making his lunch until he was married!!
I’m not a coffee drinker, but I’ve been told by many, that Pearle made the best coffee! She loved to have friends and family over for coffee, dessert and a visit. Theresa would often bring the dessert for their visit, which could last for hours! She could talk the ear off a cob of corn! She would spend hours on the phone, but when she got off, would tell you the other person was doing all the talking. She did make an effort to keep in touch with her sister Mary and other relatives who lived all over, either by phone or writing letters.
She always looked forward to her annual Birthday outing with her sister Jean, it was the event of the year! Jean would pick her up and they would spend the day together, go for lunch and of course go shopping!
Pearle loved a good deal! Especially at the local thrift stores! She had an eye for quality items and would take the time to seek them out. Before you knew it, she had a complete outfit that looked like she bought it from a high-end boutique.
Pearle was always “done-up”. She was a classy lady, especially with her jewelry and fingers full of rings! She Sparkled!! She took great pride in her appearance and even took the time to put her hair in pin curls each night before bed. I can still see Zeddy or Scooter lying in the bathroom sink while she did her bedtime routine.
She loved animals, especially cats and had many over the years. There were cat pictures, cards, gift bags and even stuffed cats when she couldn’t have a live pet with her. While at Eden Care, she actually had a stuffed cat that was so realistic and it even purred! One of our favorite visits there, she was holding the cat by the ears and said to our kids, “I’m going to eat these ears up! Yum, yum, yum!” It was hilarious!
We all have memories of Pearle to cherish. Thank you for being here to honor her today.
