Morley’s Obituary
Morley James Brown – 89,Springhill, passed away October 22,2020 at High Crest Nursing Home, Springhill. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, and brother-in-law. Born in Springhill, he was son of Morley Roland and Grace Elizabeth (Thompson) Brown. Dad began working on locomotives at the Cumberland Railway and Coal Company and later as a machinist with the same company. He loved being a machinist and later worked at Robb’s and then Enamel Heating. A change in career led him to become a Corrections Officer working in Dorchester, Springhill Institution, Shulie Lake Camp, and finally retiring from Springhill Institution. His life long work of love was his blueberry field. He took great pride in it and spent much of his life walking, working, clearing, hunting, or just being one with nature at his trailer. He spent hours sitting outside his trailer just enjoying the outdoors and all the wildlife. He even tried his hand at tapping trees and boiling sap making some tasty syrup. He loved to spend time at the camp also whenever he could, especially during hunting season. Every fall he prepared for the season, packing his knapsack and anticipating getting that big buck! He respected nature and loved being in it! He was an avid hunter of small and large game and had many hunting tales to tell. For several years he was also a fur harvester but he preferred hunting deer. As he aged he just preferred to sit outside the camp or trailer and feed the squirrels and Gray Jays. No stranger to hard work he spent hours (after his work shift) chopping wood, working his berry field, or tending his vegetable garden. In younger years Dad and Mom enjoyed camping and traveled all over Nova Scotia and Newfoundland but their favorite spot was Fox Harbour. He was also an avid fisherman. He enjoyed brook fishing in younger years, walking the Lawrence Branch near South Brook. In later years he and Mom spent every free moment in their boat on Economy Lake. They may not have caught many fish but their time together there was golden. His real passion was his family. He was a fierce protector who would do anything for his children. He was our «go to», helping us with anything we asked. He gave from the heart asking for nothing in return. He loved his grandchildren displaying all their photos. He loved to have them climb upon his knee and would bounce and sing to them. Many will remember Old Suzanna and Old Dan Tucker. He wanted to hear from us all frequently or he would worry. When we were in a bind he was there to help us out and telling us «no worries; it will all come out in the wash». We will forever miss all the wisdom he had to share and the many stories of his childhood like time spent with family at the sugar woods in South Brook. Hard work took its toll on his health and it resulted in him requiring both shoulders replaced and both knees replaced. He often joked, calling himself the «bionic man» or «man of steel»! Other hobbies include reading westerns (especially Louis Lamour), jigsaw puzzles (he always let Mom finish puzzle with last few pieces), and doing scratch tickets. Both Dad and Mom enjoyed taking care of their little Yorkie Pebbles and the affection they received from her. Dad made a good life for and with the love of his life, our Mom, married for 69 years before her passing. His heart was broken and as he grew closer to God he prayed and yearned for the day they would be reunited. Left to mourn are son, Rod Brown; daughters, Laura Brown, Candace Mattix, and Angela (Mike) Casey. Grandchildren; Amanda (Forrest), Erin, Elizabeth, Melanie (Fred), Ryan (Aleasha), Sarah, Chris (Sarah), Amanda (Josh), Jill (Brayden), Brenna (Brandon), and Michael (Gabrielle). Great grandchildren; Quintin, Olivia, Jasey ,Maryn, Eric, Emmalee, Ava, Anna, Tanner, Carter, Ryker, Sadie, Alice, Keith, Ryah, Seth, Jacxton, Oscar ,and Charlotte. Brother-in-law, Keith (Bev) Ward and sister-in-law, Marilyn Ward and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by the love of his life, Candace; son-in-law, Bryan Mattix; grandchildren, Meghan and Nathan Mattix; sisters, Lurley Hayward and Audrey (Thompson) MacLeod; brothers-in-law, Ken Thompson, Jack MacLeod, and Allan Hayward. Special uncle, Ross Brown (who was like another father). Donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, Diabetes Association, Mapleton Cemetery or charity of your choice.
