Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Jane Brazeau from Yorkton, Saskatchewan. She passed away at Regina Wascana Grace Hospice (operated by Salvation Army) on November 11, 2020 (Remembrance Day) at the age of 95.
She was predeceased by her parents Philamine (nee Pelletier) and Fredrick Allary: her husband and the father of her children Stanley Brazeau ; children Roy Brazeau, Joyce Wells, Lorne Brazeau; grandson Trance LaFontaine; son in laws Philip LaFontaine , Eugene Flamont and daughter in law Mary M Brazeau; sisters and brothers Isadore, Celina, Helen, Alec, William, Edna, Bernice and Yvonne.
She is survived by her children; Lloyd (Terry), Lyn, Bev, Lyle (Regina), Bob (Clara), Debbie , Sandra (Gary), daughter in law Alerena; grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews including godchildren Alvin, Sylvia, Marilyn, and Mervin and nephew baby John Melenchuk who was like mom and dad’s 11th child.
Mom was born in her parents house at Crescent Lake on September 9, 1925. She grew up with all her siblings in that same house. She was very close to her brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. On August 23, 1941 at the age of 15 she married Stanley Joseph Brazeau (age 17) at grandma Allary’s house. They celebrated for 3 days! They had 10 beautiful children. They lived in Crescent Lake and later moved to the Boggy Creek area for a while and then returned back to Crescent Lake. In 1981 she moved to Yorkton and lived there until August 28, 2020 when she had her stroke.
In mom’s younger years she worked side by side with her husband. They did a lot of hard manual work such as stooking, picking roots, picking stones, hauling bales and driving tractor. While living at the farm in Crescent Lake, she enjoyed looking after the cows and taking care of them, giving them needles and helping with the calves at birth. She milked cows and separated the cream from the milk, and made butter from the cream. She planted big gardens that were at least ½ acre in size. She then canned all the vegetables. She also canned fruit, meat, jams and jellies and numerous kinds of pickles. Everything we ate was either planted or raised on the farm. Her home was home to many nieces and nephews. They loved going to visit her at the farm. Many times they would stay for long visits and help with the chores around the farm. There was always something to do.
In 1976 mom and a group of ladies formed a company called Sunrise Canvas Ltd. they worked together until 1986. She enjoyed working there as one of the seamstresses and always had fun stories to tell us. Through out her life she made her family clothes and did mending for her children or whoever asked her. She was very creative as an entrepreneur and took on odd jobs such as hauling furniture for Social Services with her ½ ton truck and painting houses for low income housing. She always knew how to make money and was not afraid to try new things. She worked very hard all her life. Even this year she was baking bread and making pies.
In her earlier years up until her late 80’s she enjoyed dancing, which included square dancing, waltzes, polka’s, jives and jigging. She always said “your dad was a good dancer”. One of her favorite pastimes was playing cards maybe it was because she would win most of the time.
She was very close to her children and grandchildren. Until the end she was over the top protective of her children, remember that her children did no wrong. She would take her girls thrifting every time she saw them, and at the age of 94 she could still tire them out. Taking a road trip to Calgary always meant a detour to the thrift stores in Medicine Hat and Swift Current.
We will miss you mom and you will be forever in our hearts. You are the most amazing woman we know. You are our Beautiful Momma.
