Obituary
MAE WEST SELMAN, beloved wife of the late Barker Selman , passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 in Raymond, Alberta, just 37 days short of her 102nd birthday making her the oldest resident in Raymond.
Mae will be missed by her children; Gary (Bernice) Selman of Calgary, Terry Moxley of Calgary, LuWana (Heinz) Knopfel of Winchester, Virginia, and Karen Taylor of Raymond. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 52 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents, Harden and Annie West and her siblings; Frank (Violet) West, Ethel (Lyman) Jacobs, Thelma (Don) Merrill, Mabel (Horace) Payne, Beth (Del) Leavitt and Hubert (Grace) West.
Mae was born February 22, 1918 in Mountain View, AB. and was raised at the West homestead at the base of the beautiful Old Chief Mountain. At her senior year of high school, she moved to Raymond to help her sister raise her twins. She became the first female student body president of the Raymond High School. There she met the love of her life, Barker Selman and they were married September 24, 1942. Together they spent 4 years in Kingston, Ontario as Barker served in the army. Their oldest child, Gary, was born there. After the war ended, they moved back to Raymond where Terry, LuWana and Karen were born. They have lived in Raymond ever since. She was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and she served in many callings which she loved. Mae and Barker served many years in the Cardston, Alberta Temple. They served a mission in the Tongan Islands from 1988 to 1990.
Mae worked at Hancock Insurance which later became Ridgeview Insurance where she stayed 25 years.
Barker and Mae loved to travel and enjoyed visiting many locations throughout the world. She loved to crochet and quilt and each of their grandchildren received an afghan and quilt made with love, for their wedding gifts. She spent many years serving in the Ladies Auxiliary and Seniors organization.
Her posterity will always remember her sweet spirit, her smile, her kindness, and her genuine love for them. Her example of Christlike love and service is a legacy for each of us to pattern our lives after.
