Memorial Donation
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother Laura, formerly of Port Hawkesbury, on October 10th, 2020, at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, at the age of 91. Born in Montague, P.E.I., she was the daughter of the late Harold “Harry” and Filomena (Vuozzo) Gillis. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years Gordon in 2010. Her early life was spent growing up in Montague along the Montague River, where she spent many days swimming in the summer and skating in the winter with her sisters and cousins. Laura’s family relocated to Halifax where she came to meet the love of her life, Gordon.
Mom enjoyed many things in life and was a social butterfly. She was an avid golfer and curler, being the first female president of the Port Hawkesbury Curling Club. She enjoyed photography and going on adventures with “The Girls”; Ruth, Kay, and Annabelle. Mom and Dad enjoyed their time traveling, making friends, and memories together that would last a lifetime. In her later years, she revelled in the enjoyment of her three grandchildren, always taking an active role in their lives.
Mom enrolled at the Halifax School of Business, where after graduation she was employed by the Nova Scotia Department of Lands and Forestry. In 1960, she relocated to Port Hawkesbury, where she began her employment with Nova Scotia Pulp Limited. Mom also took time off between 1966 and 1973 to be home with her young family. She then later returned to Nova Scotia Pulp Limited in the Newsprint Department as secretary until her retirement in 1993.
Laura is survived by her son Barry (Denise) and daughter Cathy MacRae (Rocky). Grandsons David MacRae & Craig MacRae (Andrea), and granddaughter Hayley Thompson. Mom leaves behind many nieces and nephews on Prince Edward Island, as well as Florida, and Nassau.
Mom was also predeceased by sisters Edith Bowe & Jean Wilson, and brothers-in-law Vincent Bowe & Duncan Wilson.
Mom was a member of the Zion Robertson Presbyterian Church, and after amalgamation, a member of St. Mark’s United Church.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 14th from 2-4 pm and 7-9pm at Green’s Funeral Home located at 507 Bernard Street, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral Service will be held at 10am on Thursday, October 15th at St. Mark’s United Church, with family burial to follow. Social distancing and masks are a requirement for both occasions.
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Laura can be made to the following organizations; Sherbrooke Cemetery Fund, Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, and the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home in Antigonish for their compassion and care during mom’s time with them.
