With great sadness, my father passed away after his battle with cancer on April 27, 2020. Always an adventurous and stubborn man, he fought all the way to the end.
My dad grew up in Germany during the second World War and he would regale us with his tales of stealing food from farmers as he ran away laughing with his older brother. As he got older, his fascination with cars and how they worked became his passion. At the age of 14, he began his apprenticeship to become a mechanic and at the age of 19 he travelled to Canada to make a new life for himself.
In 1961, he met my mom, a fellow German, when he picked her up at Union station in Toronto to accompany her to her new home. She had just emigrated to Canada and my dad was doing a favor for a friend. After a brief courtship, they married and settled into living and working in Toronto. Their love affair lasted 54 years.
My father had an opportunity to work as a mechanic at W&P Motors in Richmond Hill and so my parents moved north to what was to become our family home. In 1970, 1973 and 1975, my parents welcomed Curtis, Tanya and Andrea into their family. At the same time, my dad became the owner of W&P Motors (now Volkswagen Richmond Hill) in 1972. The dealership became a central part to our upbringing as did the passion for cars and speed.
My father enjoyed taking his family out on weekends dancing at the German Club or fishing in nearby lakes or hiking in the many conservation areas near our house. Every year he would take the family camping at Mosport so we could watch the car races. He loved to travel especially by car and we had many family vacations to Florida and the east coast of Canada with Elvis Presley blaring the entire way. We would also visit family in Germany and had some special and memorable trips to Egypt, Italy, Cuba and Alaska.
Always a charmer, he loved a good joke, especially if it was inappropriate. We had many gatherings at our family home with my dad grilling, while our friends and family played in the pool. My father was a very generous man and he was always doling out chocolate to his grandchildren and friend’s children. He was usually the life of the party.
Kurt is survived by his three children and five grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family and all who knew him.
Due to Covid 19 no services will be held at this time.
