It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of John Radich on October 19, 2020 at the age of 95 at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. John fought a seven year battle against lymphoma with bravery and strength. He was the son of Janko and Dragica Radic. John is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Margaret (nee Bodi). Beloved father to Linda Policelli (Steve) and Robert Radich (Cindy). Cherished and proud Grandfather to Caitlin, John, Matthew, and Michael. Dear brother of the late Zora Novakovich of Toronto and survived by his brother Peter Gvozdanovic (Donna) of Welland. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
John (Janko) was born in Sosice, Croatia on August 9, 1925. He immigrated to Canada with his parents and sister at age 5 and arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia on February 15, 1931 aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam. His family settled in northern Ontario. John was a corporal in the Canadian Armed Forces during WWII. John married Margaret Bodi on May 1, 1954 and had a daughter, Linda and son, Robert. They were long-time residents of Welland where he was a machinist at John Deere in Welland for 44 years. John was a proud founding member of the Croatian National Home in Welland. He travelled to Croatia to visit his hometown and camped from coast to coast across Canada and the United States. John had many self-taught building skills and could repair anything. After retirement, John and Margaret moved to Hamilton to enjoy a new home and the closeness of family.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Irwin Walker, a leader in hematology at Hamilton Health Science, Juravinski Hospital Cancer Centre and the dedicated doctors and nurses at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton Medical Step Down/CCU for their compassionate care in his final days.
As per John’s wishes, cremation has taken place with interment and a celebration of life to be held at a later date. Donations in John’s memory can be made to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.
Thank you for being a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. In our hearts you hold a special place that no one else could ever fill. We love you and will miss you. Rest in peace.
