Suddenly on April 4, 2020. Predeceased by her adored husband Merv, and her parents, Bob and Bell Smith. Loving mother to Rob & Zrinka, Darlene, Gayle & Mark. Fiercely proud Nana to Maggi, Bella, Becca, and Meghan. Cherished sister to May and Bob. Loved all those in her extended Domagala and Smith families. Born in Toronto in 1939, Sally then spent the next ten years of her life in Belfast, returning home to grow up in Cabbagetown before settling down in Etobicoke with Merv, the kids, and her beloved dogs. She was a stay-at-home Mom for many years, returning to work when she got bored and the kids “were old enough.” She worked for the City of Toronto’s Tax Department, happily retiring about twenty years ago. We think she would say she had a pretty damned good life.
Unfortunately though, Alzheimer’s is a mighty fine thief. It does not only rob you of your memories, it slowly chips away at that person you took your whole life to become. So, when you remember Sally, please remember her as a loving wife and mother. Remember how she and Merv loved to dance, to watch their shows, and to bicker. That she took care of her older sister, and was a strong supporter to those with developmental challenges. We will definitely remember how much she loved her granddaughters, much more than she loved her kids, as she so often remarked. Remember that she was a busy hockey mom and Girl Guide leader. Remember how she could swear like a trucker, even in the politest of situations. Remember her mastery of trivia, and it was true, no one was better. Or how she spent one weekend of her life canning pickles, and the next thirty years talking about how great they were. She never liked cooking. Her granddaughters will certainly never forget that she was always first in line for the newest Disney video or Harry Potter book, and that she always had a (store-bought of course) cookie waiting for them. Remember her in those final years, happily sitting in the front of the house she raised her family in, the dog at her side, chatting with and charming absolutely everyone who walked by. She will be dearly missed.
Thank you to Etobicoke Services for Seniors, and especially the staff at the Wesburn Manor Day Program, for keeping her safe and occupied for so many years. To the staff at Eatonville Care Centre, we cannot thank you enough for the care you showed our Mom in her final months. Please know that you are always in our thoughts as you continue working through this crisis. We salute you.
In these challenging times we will be unable to get together to celebrate her properly. We will do that, but only when it is safe to do so. A small, family-only burial is planned. Online memorials are welcome at www.turnerporter.ca. And if you are so inclined, you can make a donation in Sally’s name. She would love that.
