Howard’s Obituary
MacCARTHY, Howard Murray ~ Age 94, Auburn, Kings Co., passed away on Monday, August 31, 2020, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. The youngest of six children, Howard was born on September 28, 1925, in their family home, Auburn, Kings Co., N.S. A life-long resident of the small Hamlet, he was affectionately known as “The Mayor”. Howard obtained his education in a one room school house and at age 14, he and his brother drove an eight mile mail delivery route after school via horse and wagon or sleigh, depending on the season. At age 16, upon graduation, he moved to Sheet Harbour and worked for Fairey Aviation, (Clark Ruse), a British aircraft manufacturer during the Second World War. Homesick for the Valley, he returned in the fall and enrolled at Mack Business College, Kentville. Eager to find employment, he strolled down Webster St. one day in to a clothing store, “Everything For The Dad & The Lad”, later known as R. W. Phinney Ltd. This would be the start of a successful 50 year career in the menswear industry. From 1942-50, Howard worked for H. A. Phinney Men’s Clothing Store in Middleton. In 1950, he became a Manufacturers Agent for the B.V.D. Shirt Company. He travelled throughout Atlantic Canada visiting small town clothing stores. Working with first, second and sometimes third generations of family store owners, Howard established life-long friendships in the communities he visited, and always made time for a cup of tea and colorful political discussions inevitably ensued. From a young age he enjoyed the thrill of buying and selling, whether it was real estate or cars. He had a strong work ethic and it gave him great satisfaction to fill his customers’ needs, always followed by a firm handshake to close a successful deal. His second career following retirement at age 64 was as a used car dealer, owning and operating Howard MacCarthy Sales Ltd. in Auburn until his death. A natural talker and story teller to boot, he loved to tell jokes and always enjoyed an audience. Howard was a Charter and Life Member of the Aylesford & District Lions Club with over 50 years of service; Member, Trustee and Elder of the Aylesford United Church; Member of Ionic Lodge No. 73, A.F. & A.M., Middleton, where he received his 70 year bar; and former Member of the Commercial Travellers Association, Kentville. While attending a dance at the Cornwallis Inn, Kentville one summer evening in the late 50s, he met the love of his life, Doris June Kinsman, of Welsford. A Christmas wedding was held December 16, 1961. They enjoyed summers camping in PEI and in later years, winters in Florida. Baked beans and brown bread on Saturday night was a must along with a great game of cards with friends. Howard is survived by his wife of 58 years, June; daughter, Susan (Glenn Tidman), Kingston, grandchildren, Christie and Brett; daughter, Donna (Richard Bastock), Auburn, grandchildren Emily, Abigail and Logan; great grandchildren, Charlotte, Eli and Joni; six nieces and one nephew. The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by his parents, J. Edgar and Edith Pearl (Dooks) MacCarthy, sisters, Lydia Cormier, Mildred Murray and Christine MacCarthy; brothers, Wilfred and Lloyd, nephew, Roderick. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. A private funeral service conducted by Rev. John Moses will take place in Aylesford United Church (unfortunately due to public gathering restrictions this has to be limited to invitation only). A live stream of the service will be available to be viewed through the funeral home website ‘Live Stream’ option beginning at 1:55 p.m. ADT, Friday, September 4. Masonic tribute and interment will take place, in Aylesford United Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Howard’s memory to Aylesford United Church or Aylesford & District Lions Club are welcomed. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, toll free 1-855-825-3448. Online guestbook may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
