Gertrude (Gerta) B. Stutz

Passed away peacefully at home on September 11, 2020, in her 92nd year. Gerta was predeceased by her beloved husband Hans in 2009 after 57 years of marriage. She leaves surviving her daughters Eva Christopher (Douglas) and Heidi Webster; her grandchildren Nikki Hincks (Dan), Peter Christopher (Anne), Glenn Webster (Veronica) and Tom Webster; and her great grandchildren Hunter, Andreas and Finley.
Born in Germany, Gerta and Hans came to Canada on their honeymoon in 1951. They stayed and made Ontario their home, raising their family first in Kingston and then Ottawa.
While caring for her young family, Gerta trained as a nurse (graduating second in her class) and worked with geriatric patients. Later she began work in the hospitality industry and was General Manager of The Cartier Towers Apartment Hotel. Her smiling face was the first thing to greet guests. She loved interacting with them. She will be greatly missed by all of the staff and Managers at The Cartier Place Suite Hotel.
An avid athlete, Gerta played competitive handball in her younger years. Sailing, wind-surfing, tennis, hiking, skiing and horseback riding were lifelong pursuits. She could still be found carving turns in Aspen Colorado in her 80s. Her sense of adventure took her all over the world.
Gerta was active in local charity work, serving as Treasurer for the “Ki-Anns” affiliated with Kiwanis. She was passionate about animals and supported the Humane Society as well as various wildlife conservation groups. Her cats were her constant companions.
Most of all she was a loving, nurturing, supportive wife, mother and Oma. She spent many fun filled summers with her children and grandchildren at the cottage on Farren Lake. She was a wonderful cook and baker – her apple pies were legendary.
The family wish to thank Gerta’s amazing caregivers who made it possible for her to remain in her home. They surrounded her with kindness, compassion and great affection.
We will all very much miss this beautiful, elegant lady so full of laughter and fun, and above all else, love.
Due to Covid 19 restrictions, the service will be held privately. A commemorative celebration will take place when the situation permits.
In lieu of flowers, gestures of condolence can take the form of a donation to the Dementia Society Ottawa and Renfrew County, or the Ottawa Humane Society.
