George Allan Fisher
July 31, 1919 – April 7, 2020
Born in Dauphin, MB to Reuben and Maggie Fisher. George celebrated his 100th birthday with a party at the Dauphin Legion last August. He was thrilled to share this time with his extended family and friends. Left to mourn are George’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; George (Shirley), Rob (Dawn and son Stuart), Jamie; Rod (Elaine), Ryan (Haley), Allison; Doug (Irene), Jodi (Jayson), Kristy (Tim); and Christine (Lorne), David (Lorraine and children, Erin, Addy, Claire, Paige, Luke); Kevin (Jenelle and children, Elizabeth, Katherine, Jane); Doug (Janine and children, Natalie and Cassidy). George is predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Margaret (nee Dewar). He was also predeceased by his parents, brothers and their spouses, William (& Stella) and Jim (& Marion), an infant daughter, his brothers and sister – in laws, Rod and Kay Dewar, Kay and Alan Durston, Isabelle and Ronald Paul and numerous nephews and nieces.
George (Dad) grew up on the family farm at Gartmore (just south west of Dauphin). He assisted with the family farm leaving school after Grade 8 to work full time on the farm. Dad always regretted not being able to continue his schooling and instilled in all of us the importance of lifelong learning. Dad never stopped his learning. He took many courses from home and community and was self taught in many ways. Dad had an amazing talent for seeing solutions to problems that others couldn’t see. He loved to create and improve machines for the farm. Well after his MS prevented him from getting in and out of the tractors to help in the fields, he continued to work on his metal lathe to help build and repair equipment on the farm. He was an excellent carpenter, building the family home and many of the items within. Farming was important to Dad and he gave back through his involvement on the Pool Elevator Board and with the Manitoba Seed Growers Association. His community involvement didn’t stop with his agriculture interests. When he saw inequities for rural children in the school system, he successfully ran for the school board to resolve these issues. He was also part of the construction of the new (1961) United Church and served on the board.
Life was not all work for Dad. He enjoyed flying, fishing, hunting and curling and shared many stories about these adventures. Dad was a honorary life member of the Dauphin Farmers’ Curling Club. Mom and Dad spent many winters south in Mesa enjoying the warmer weather and visits with Mom’s sister and husband in Phoenix. Summer Sunday’s were often spent at the lake where he was always a willing boat driver for the many water skiers and in fact also did around or two as a skier.
In later years, Dad began to open up about some of his war time experiences. He was involved as a saper doing repair and maintenance on equipment. Although not on the front lines, he shared many stories about being in the trenches and hearing the mortar shells overhead. He was our personal reminder of how important it is – “Lest we Forget”
Dad was a quiet man but a very thoughtful one. When he said something, it was usually worth listening. He loved his time in the Lorray Manor, playing bingo and cribbage with the many willing partners.
Following a short time in the hospital, Dad moved to St. Paul’s home in early March where he quickly found new cribbage partners. Unfortunately, this did not last long as his health deteriorated. He left us on April 7 and after 19 years has gone to join Mom, the love of this life. A Family Internment has occurred, and a celebration of his life will be planned for a later time. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the MS Society or to the Dauphin First United Church.
