Fr. James Anthony Beresford

Father Jim, the beloved son of the late James and Nellie (Ryan) Beresford, completed his Christian journey Sunday, July 12, 2020 in St. John’s, NL. He leaves behind a family who enjoyed his humor, appreciated his many kind deeds, and admired his approach to solving problems as he went along promoting peace and seeking justice. The family includes deceased members who are there to welcome Father Jim in the Kingdom of God: David (Bertha); Teresa (Paul) Fardy; Kathleen. Left to miss Father Jim’s warmth are: Sister Marie; Sister Ruth; Anne; Aidan (Shirley); Carmel MacDonald and Brendan (Virginia).
Father Jim leaves behind his wonderful nieces and nephews and their families: David (Susan), Paul, Colleen (John),James (Anna), Carolyn; Brian (Maria), Mark (Michelle), Paul, Marie, Joanne (Brian); David, Neil; Craig (Janet), Dean and Caiti (Brent) Meghan, Erinn, Caiti (Juffy), Claire. In addition to his family, Father Jim leaves behind his Archbishop and priest friends whom he always praised for the work they have done and do in the faith community.
Father Jim grew up in Buchans, studied in Dublin, and was ordained a priest on June 21,1964.
Father Jim, as a young curate with Father Joseph O’Brien, enjoyed serving the parishioners of Harbour Grace/Riverhead/ Spaniard’s Bay. From there he moved on to appreciate the parishioners in King’s Cove/Keels/Duntara/Stock Cove, Badger/ Buchans/Springdale, St. Paul’s, St. Peter’s, St. Kevin’s/St. Joseph’s, Placentia/Dunville/Ship Harbour, Bell Island, St. Matthew’s, Corpus Christi, and St. Patrick’s and was impressed by his many good friends. In his retirement, Father Jim enjoyed his time with his fellow priests at O’Dwyer and appreciated Holly’s on-the-spot service.
Funeral arrangements are being entrusted to Caul’s. There will be no visitation. Instead of sending flowers you may wish to make a donation to a charity of your choice.
The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at Mary Queen of the World Parish at 11:00 on Wednesday, July 15. The funeral will be found on www.mqwp.org. Those who would like to listen into the service by radio, you may do so on 91.1 FM.
