Elizabeth Jackson Smith (nee Roy) known by many as Betty, and by her loving family as Gran, passed peacefully and naturally in her sleep in her 91st year on Friday May 22 at Edgewater Gardens Long Term Care Facility in Dunnville, Ontario. Our Gran was born in Cumnock, Scotland on February 19, 1930. She was the oldest of 5 sisters. She came to Hamilton with husband Andy and 2 year old Liz in 1952. Son Donnie was born in Canada. Gran could make anything out of fabric. She could sew, crochet, knit, and rug hook. Gran was a gifted seamstress, milliner and tailor. Even at Edgewater Gardens, Gran had a knitting club of residents. Gran was in demand for her crocheted “baby jane” baby slippers or sneakers for the newborns of Edgewater workers and relatives. Gran really enjoyed her life with the wonderful care givers at Edgewater Gardens for the last 7 years. Our Gran was such a thoughtful, caring and gentle person. Her Edgewater “family” would often visit after their shift and even on days off would come to visit or help her with her meals. Many would even bring their children or pets to visit with Gran. If Edgewater staff were looking for someone, Gran’s room was often the first place they looked. Edgewater was close to daughter Liz’s cottage and close to son Donnie’s house. This assured Gran would have lots of family visits and always fresh flowers. Gran is survived by daughter Liz Blunt (Don) and son Donnie (Jacque), Granddaughters Lisa and Heather (Liz) and Jacey and Cassidy (Donnie) and great grandson Spencer (Lisa) “her big boy” and great granddaughter Madelyn (Heather) “her wee sweetie”. Gran and Pa were the tiny perfect couple, holding hands and devoted to one another for 62 years. Gran was predeceased by husband Andy and sisters Nancy, Joan and Helen, and survived by sister Jackie. Words are not enough to express how much we appreciate the wonderful caregivers at Edgewater Gardens. They enriched her life. A celebration of Gran’s life will be held at Bay Gardens, Burlington when gatherings are permitted. For those who wish, we know Gran would appreciate your support to help find a cure for arthritis ….
