Eleanor’s Obituary
Eleanor Kathleen Rogers passed away peacefully at one-hundred years of age on October 8th at the North Queens Nursing Home. She was born in Lockeport Nova Scotia on November 23rd, 1919 as the youngest child of James and Lena Burgess. Eleanor grew up in East Port L’Hebert with her seven brothers and sisters. Her family ran a successful clam-canning business for a number of years and their product was named ‘Burgess Clams’.
From an early age Eleanor’s main ambition was to obtain a teacher’s degree. After achieving this goal she went on to work as a teacher and later as a school librarian for a total of forty-two years. During her long career she taught in Nova Scotia, Quebec and Ontario. When Eleanor approached retirement she was pleased to return home to her beloved South Shore region. She was married to her loving husband Clayton Ernest Rogers for sixty-one years and they had one son named John Rogers. Eleanor was the last member of our family’s older generation. She will live on as a lasting inspiration to those of us who remain and will be sadly missed.
