Edith Arlene (Stothart) Mundle
(aged 80) passed away peacefully at McNair Manor on Tuesday, May 26,
2020.
Born in West Branch, Kent County
February 20, 1940. Eldest child of Thomas and Hazel (Sinton) Stothart.
Survived by husband of 60 years, George. Three sons; Stephen (Mary) of
Saint John, Bill of Moncton and Neal of Moncton. Grandchildren Tom,
Alannah, Bailey, and Emily. Three sisters Maxine (late Carl)
MacDonald, Donna (late Gary) Little, Joyce (Allen) Murphy, brother
John (Debbie). Several nieces, nephews and cousins. Pre-deceased by
parents Thomas and Hazel Stothart and infant brother,
Vincent.
Mom’s mother was ill
during much of her childhood and passed away when she was a teenager.
Mom and her sister Maxine (aunt Mackie to us) helped to care for their
3 younger siblings, starting a long life time of caring for children.
Some of her early life adventures included working in the Niagara, ON
region picking peaches and in Rothesay, N.B. working at the Netherwood
School. Married in 1960, she had 3 sons of her own by 1966. The young
family of 5 lived in a small 2 bedroom apartment on High street until
1973 when they ‘moved on up’ to a house of their
own on Dominion. The property provided a much needed yard for 3
growing boys to play in and space for a summer garden. The house was
the gathering place for over 40 years for family, friends, children
and grandchildren with so many wonderful meals. Mom loved to cook and
the kitchen was her domain throughout her life and heaven help the boy
that tracked dirty shoes over the recently scrubbed
floor.
In
addition to looking after the house and 3 active boys, Mom also worked
several jobs including a cook at Ritchie’s Diner on St.
George and cashier at Dixon’s Suppurate. She also cleaned
houses for several elderly families in the neighbourhood, many times
while Dad and the boys were outside mowing the lawn. Mom was not a
morning person, but for many years she would be the first one up in
the house getting ready for an early shift at the diner. Kids being
kids, we begged until we were allowed to have both a cat and a dog.
There was one epic morning we all recall when chaos erupted in the
kitchen involving the cat, the dog (then a puppy) and some spilt tea
and other items. Roaring laughter from a husband and 3 boys upstairs
did not improve her mood. Supper that evening was of a Spartan
variety.
Dad retired from CNR in 1993 which
allowed them much more time to enjoy their passion of camping, hiking
and enjoying the outdoors. Family camping trips had been at the
forefront of vacation time every summer in memory, first in a tent and
then in the opulent Sears pop-up tent trailer purchased in the early
70’s. Having moved up to a truck mounted camper after
retirement, they were now able to travel more freely any day of the
week and later in the fall. Their adventures were capped with a long
desired trip to Newfoundland, plus countless trips to Mount Carleton
and most of the National Parks throughout Atlantic Canada, especially
Fundy. Together they hiked every trail in Fundy park, many numerous
times. They also once completed the whole Dobson trail over a 3 day
trek, along with two of the boys and some family
friends.
Mom was very active in the
church. She was a life member of the United Church Women; she was the
Sunday school treasurer, teacher and nursery school attendant for over
25 years at the former Wesley Memorial United
Church.
In her spare
time when she wasn’t in the kitchen, Mom enjoyed playing
bingo and card games, listening to Country and Gospel music and
throughout her life, adored children.
The family is grateful for the
wonderful caregivers at the Moncton Hospital, Integrity Home Health,
SerenaCare and especially McNair Manor where she resided to the
end.
A
Service to celebrate and honour Arlene’s life will be held
at Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton
(858-1995) on Thursday, June 11, 2020 at 2:00 pm with a maximum
participation of 50 people, due to the pandemic. Interment will be at
St. John’s United Church Cemetery, West Branch on Friday,
June 12, 2020 at 2:00 pm.

made to the St. John’s United Church Cemetery, West Branch,
