Dennis Robert Hoffman
March 11,1945 – October 26, 2020
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, dad, grandpa, great grandpa, brother and uncle after a long illness at the Grace Hospital. Dennis is survived by his wife of 51 years Darlene, and his 5 children Lisa(Allan), Kathy(Slade), Sheryl(Sebastien), Marilyn(Tyson) and Dennis Jr(Bob)(Leigh), his 12 grandchildren Crystal, Breanne(Joel), Tuesday, Derek, Braden(McKenzie), Kyra(Quin), Rebecca(Tyler), Jordan(Hunter), Torin, Curtis, Jessica, Steven. His 4 great grandchildren Rae-lynne, Dominic, Elijah and Nylah. His brothers Doug, Raymond, Fred(Darlene) and sisters Shirley, Patricia(Ron). His brothers-in-law Raymond(Pearla), Welby(Linda), Norman, Barry and sisters-in-law Helen and Lorna(Tom) and his many nieces and nephews. Dennis was predeceased by his parents Robert and Georgina, father and stepmother in-law George and Marion, mother-in-law Ellen Swan, his sisters Sandra, Barbara and Connie, sister-in-law Valerie and brother-in-law Lucien.
Dennis was born in Wpg Manitoba on March 12, 1945 and was the eldest of 9 children. He moved throughout Manitoba with his parents and siblings residing in Churchill, Oakpoint, Headingly and back to Winnipeg where he met his wife Darlene. They married in 1969 and moved and raised their family to Warren Manitoba in 1974 and later retired to Woodlands in 2007. In 2009 Dennis suffered a stroke and after a lengthy stay at Health Science Center and Deer Lodge Center, he moved to Oakview Extendicare Long term care home in March 2010. Dennis enjoyed the interacting with the staff and residents of Oakview, meeting many people and finding buddies to watch hockey with.
Dennis had a various job over his lifetime before he found an interest in farming. He worked at Canada Messenger, Walter Woods, mining in Pickle Lake Ont and then settling into his farming career. He started in Rosser on the Holtman hog farm and then to the Penner hog farm in Argyle. He switched to dairy farming working on the Hibbit farm and retiring after many years working with Bill Swan.
Dennis had several interests over the years from playing in a broomball league, canasta tournaments, bowling, camping, fishing, listening or humming to country music and time on his boat. He spent many hours in his yard working in his gardens or tinkering with lawn mowers. His greatest passion was spending time with his family, long weekend family camping trips or just stopping by one of his kids house for a visit, watch a movie and have a rye and coke. All of his children knew how much they were loved and how much they meant to him. He never hesitated to help out or join in on what they were doing. But his grandchildren, they were his greatest treasures. On his weekends off he would be busy taking in their sports cheering them on, even after his stroke he continued to attend their activities and milestone achievements. The staff and residents at Oakview always knew when he was heading home for a visit with his family. He would be humming to music waving his finger as he could barely contain his excitement. He would wave goodbye to everyone on his way out with the biggest grin. Going home for holidays were really special to him, it was time he was able to spend with his wife, kids and grandkids all together.
We would like to say thank you to the staff at Oakview Extendicare over the last 10 ½ years, from the nurses to housekeeping and the management team. It didn’t matter who you were, what you did, you always took the time to say hi and joke around with him. Thank you for being part of his extended family. To Shannon, Barb, Marilyn, Tatianna, Lillian, Maureen, Phil, Mary and John and so many others this big grin and fist salute is for you.
To the Grace Hospital Emergency staff, Dr George, the nurses and healthcare aids on 5 North, we thank you for the care and compassion you gave our dad these last few weeks when we could not be there. Your commitment and compassion during these trying times was amazing.
Due to Covid-19 a Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
