David Alfred Kay
February 28, 1952 – November 8, 2020
The family of David (Dad, Grampie, Brother), with great sadness would like to announce his unexpected passing on November 8, 2020, in Harmony.
David is survived by his daughters, Ruth Lavergne, Wilmot; Rebecca Kay, Aylesford; his 12 grandchildren, Katie Lavergne, Aylesford; Cassie Lavergne, Aylesford; Christopher Lavergne, Torbrook; Colin, Carli, Carri and Kyle Lavergne, Wilmot; Mariah Wilson (Hayden West), Halifax; Christian Wilson, Middleton; Brooke MacInnis, Centreville; Chipman MacInnis, Centreville; and Ben Kay, Aylesford; as well as his sisters, Margaret Richards, Berwick; Linda Shannon, Halifax; niece and nephews; and his companion, Patti Sheffield. Born in Cape Breton, and later living in Bridgetown. David was predeceased by his parents, Chipman & Ruth (Moore) Kay; brother, Stephen Kay; and nephew, Stephen Brown.
David spent his teen years working on farms, haying, milking cows, riding horses, etc. He married when he was 23, to the mother of his two children. He worked at Scotian Gold briefly and then Frasers in Kingston. In 1979, David started working at Evangeline Ford in Coldbrook as a parts counter clerk. He worked for Evangeline for approximately 20 years. In 2002, David moved to Ohio, with his second wife. He later moved on to South Carolina and then back to Nova Scotia in 2016. He has been residing with his oldest daughter and her children and enjoying retirement. David learned to play guitar when he was introduced to the Ells family back in the 1960s. He was part of the Ells Family Band for many years, playing variety shows and dances throughout the valley. He then moved on to Country Storm, which also played many dances and functions. Since returning to Nova Scotia, David had been involved in many jam sessions around the Valley, including Port George, Windermere, Brickton, and most frequently Harmony. He has been playing most Sunday mornings at the Harmony Baptist Church. He has also played at Mountain Lea Lodge and other nursing homes. He could also be seen nightly on Music and Friends, and the Ultimate Online NS Kitchen Party where he would entertain everyone with his music and charm.
Visitation is by invitation only, please contact the family to request a time. Funeral service is by invitation also and a live webcast of the service will be available for viewing on the funeral home website at 10:55 a.m. AST, Saturday, November 21th, by selecting the “Live Stream” option at the top of the home page. Pastor Kim Miurhead officiating. Graveside ceremony is for family only, at Riverside Cemetery, Bridgetown. Private reception to follow, please contact the family for details.
