Obituary
Carl HALBACH
Dad celebrated his 100th birthday, with family, on November 4, 2019. He passed peacefully on April 19, 2020 at Luther Special Care Home in Saskatoon. He was born in Annaheim, SK, the fourth child of Henry and Sarah (Walters) Halbach. Dad recalls some of his time in Anaheim and as a young child the family moved to Lintlaw, SK where his father purchased some land south of town. He finished schooling at the age of 14 and started working as a hired hand with different farmers in the community. In 1943 he purchased the farm from his parents and started his farming career. Dad had an amazing mechanical ability. He borrowed some books from his brother, Leonard, and taught himself about machinery and how they operated so that he could learn how to fix them. Dad also learned how to weld. He tried things out and asked the local blacksmith for tips. He received lots of compliments on his welding. He built a blade for plowing snow, a bale stooker, and many front-end loader attachments. Dad was very good at fixing things, taking them apart to figure out what was not working, repairing them, and putting them back together. Sometimes there were spare parts, but it still worked. He used many resources to fix things which did include, at times, a bit of duct tape or glue. Dad always tried to get maximum mileage out of the things that he could. He taught us how to change oil in all farm vehicles and change flat tires on the car or truck. He taught us how to look after and raise the animals we had on the farm such as the chickens, cows, pigs, and horses as well as many other aspects of farming. Dad’s favourite thing to do on the farm was sitting on the tractor and summer fallowing. It was always a relief when the crop came off and harvest was done each year. After Dad retired from farming (or slowed down) and had more time in the winter, he learned to build furniture. He loved making end tables and coffee tables, many households in the family got a set from Dad.
Dad loved his family and always said that family was the most important thing to him. He was a strict father who taught the value of work, how to take care of ourselves and respect others. Dad loved to play cards so on Sunday evenings, mostly in the winter, we often played cards as a family. He was very good at it and was quick to point out how we might have played a different card….we learned quickly. Dad and Mom also enjoyed time spent with friends playing whist or bridge.
Dad courted a local girl, Hazel Schindel, and they were married in October 1946 in Lintlaw. They celebrated the marriage with family and friends at Hazel’s parents farm. Dad and Mom lived on the farm for almost 69 years. The last several years the land was rented out. They sold the farm in 2015 due to changes in their health. To be close to family they moved to Saskatoon. Dad leaves behind his caring and loving family; his wife Hazel, seven children – Ethel (Lawrence), Shirley (Jim), Ruth (Don), Rosemary, Phyllis (James), Joseph (Belinda) and Sandra (Wolf), 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Dad is the last of the siblings in his family and is survived by one sister-in-law Edith Halbach, spouse George, numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Lila (Eulalia), Robert, George, Barbara, Leonard, Irene and Annie (who passed away shortly after her birth).
Dad was born in Annaheim and is wish was to return to place he was born to be buried.
If you wish, please make a donation in Dad’s memory to LutherCare Foundation (Saskatoon) – Recreation Fund (luthercare.com/our-communities/luther-special-care-home/), the Heart and Stoke Foundation (www.heartandstroke.ca/get-involved/donate) or to a charity of your choice.
We are thankful for the excellent care that the staff at Luther Special Care home provided for our dad. They were very accommodating and allowed (2 daughters) to alternate and sit with dad during his end of life care. We know that Dad was very thankful for that.
We also are thankful for the family and friends in Lintlaw who helped our parents during the last years they lived on the farm.
Dad did not pass away of Covid-19.
A Private Family Service will be held now and a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at a later date. Arrangements are in care of David Schurr – Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
