Bertha Duchoeny
(née Steingart)
May 26, 1925 – October 20, 2020
Our much-loved mother, mother-in-law, sister, and grandmother passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, in her ninety-sixth year, but she will always remain in our hearts. She will be lovingly remembered by her son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Patricia, her granddaughter, Erika, and her niece, Doreen Darabaner. Bertha was the youngest child of the late David and the late Anna Steingart, and was predeceased by her brothers, Sam and Irving, her sister, Edith Assh, and by her son, David Duchoeny. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Bertha’s devoted caregiver, Anna Desouza, as well as the caring staff on the 2nd and 6th floors at Maimonides Geriatric Centre.
While it is true that we are all unique, Bertha was just a little bit more unique than most. Our many memories and stories of Bertha will never fail to make us chuckle or put a smile on our faces. Although she endured a lot of challenges in her life, Bertha was a strong and vibrant woman who had a zest for living and people. She participated in many organizations including B’nai Brith and enjoyed writing for The Suburban newspaper. Bertha was known for her wonderful sense of humour and always had a mischievous twinkle in her eye. She loved to laugh, and her laughter was infectious. One of the things she was proud of was selling a joke to the comedian Joan Rivers. A woman of many talents, Bertha enjoyed singing and dancing, and her hobbies including bowling, knitting, drawing, creative writing, and bingo. The key to Bertha’s heart? She could never resist a cheese blintz or a bowl of ice cream – preferably butterscotch ripple. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favourite charity. A private family service will take place with a privately observed shiva.
