BENTERUD Mayme Elenor December 21 2020

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints!”
– Psalm 116:15
Our beloved mother Mayme Benterud passed from this life and entered into the presence of her Lord on December 21, 2020, at the age of 101.
Mayme is survived by her 9 children: her daughters, Marlyne Seeman (Dennis), Betty Harrington (David), Shirley MacLean (Alden); and her sons, Raynold Benterud (Julie), Charles Benterud (May), Philip Benterud (Diane), Oral Benterud (Elinor), Delbert Benterud (Debbie), and Kevin Benterud (Wanda). She has been blessed with 30 grandchildren and 46 great grandchildren. Mayme is also survived by her sisters, Nettie Forseth and Ellen Israelson.
Mayme was predeceased by her husband Ragnvald; parents, Otto and Nellie Lyste; brothers, Chester, Ken, Roy and Arthur Lyste; and sister Alma Gullackson. One daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, and one great grandchild have also predeceased her.
Mayme was born in Pontiex, Saskatchewan, on November 18, 1919. The 1930s brought the drought and the depression, so Mayme, along with her family, moved from their farm in Admiral, Saskatchewan to the Peace River country. The family farmed rented land for a short time in La Glace, tried homesteading in Tupper Creek, then rented farmland in Valhalla. In 1937, the Lyste family moved to Cherry Point, Alberta, where they homesteaded four quarters of land successfully.
Mayme and Ragnvald Benterud were married in 1941 and raised their family in the hamlet of La Glace, Alberta. Mother devoted her life to raising her children with wisdom, love and discipline. Even though Mayme was kept very busy with her growing family and few conveniences, she made time to organize and teach Sunday School, conduct Summer Vacation Bible School for the children of the community, and host Ladies’ Sewing Circle events and Bible studies in her home. Mayme’s love for children and her gifting in mentoring them was recognized when she was asked to begin and teach a kindergarten class at La Glace School.
Finally able to pursue a leisure activity, she participated in and contributed to ceramics classes at the Seniors’ Community Centre. After her husband passed away in 1987, Mayme moved to Edmonton, where she enjoyed life in her Mainstreet Condo on the Lake.
Thank you to the many Bayshore caregivers, who have provided homecare for Mayme for the past eight years, and the staff at Shepherd’s Care Millwoods for their kindness and care during the past three months.
Due to current restrictions, a graveside service will be limited to ten members of the immediate family. The celebration of Mayme’s life will be held at a later date. If you so choose, memorial donations may be made to SAM Ministries for support of feeding and orphan programs in Brazil and Mozambique. This can be done online at samministries.org or by cheque sent to SAM Ministries, 3715 85 St. Edmonton, Alberta T6K 3R9.
