Arpad Janos’ Obituary
March 11, 1937 – December 24, 2020
It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Arpad “Art” Horvath on December 24th, 2020 in his 83rd year. Dearly loved husband of 60 years to Maria Magdolna (nee Hellenbarth) and proud father to Daniel (Dianne), George, and Monica (Steven Cekolj). Cherished grandfather to Ron (Mandi), Amie (Trevor Simonson), Nicolas (Lescia), Nicole, Natalie (Rob Scales), Sophia, Marina, and great-grandfather to Lucy, Sammy, Olivia, Chloe, and two more great-grandchildren on the way in 2021.
Arpad was born in Budapest, Hungary the youngest of 11 children. He fled Hungary in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution and landed in Halifax, NS in 1957. As a newcomer to Canada, he worked as a miner throughout northern Ontario and Quebec before he met the love of his life, Maria, in Montreal. The two settled in Elliot Lake where they started their family before moving to Hamilton in 1964.
In Hamilton, Arpad was a Millwright at DOFASCO where he trained, coached and mentored apprentices for 37 years, many of which, consider him a dear friend to this day and will sadly miss him.
Arpad was a true outdoorsman and liked nothing more than to escape to the ‘North Country’ where he shared a love for fishing, hunting, boating, snowmobiling, hiking in the bush and all the natural wonders of his adopted country of Canada. He passed down this love to his children and grandchildren and, in retirement, he rejoiced in sitting on the deck at the cottage with Maria and watching his grandchildren have fun on the lake.
Unfortunately, due to the current social limitations, a formal internment will take place at a later time when family and friends can gather in celebration of his life.
