With broken hearts, we, the family, regret to announce the sudden passing of an amazing husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Allan “Al” Pace. Al passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, February 13, 2020, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brief illness.
Born May 31, 1938, in Halifax, he was the son of the late Ernest and Lottie (Allan) Pace.
A graduate of Dalhousie University (B. Commerce ‘59), Al worked for various companies in the oil industry before founding Sydco Fuels Ltd., in 1982. He later expanded the company to include Scotia Propane. Al’s career included involvement with the Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, CNIB, Sydney Harbour Port Association, Sydney Curling Club, Cape Breton Partnership, Regional Hospital Foundation, the Cove Guest Home, the United Way, Sydney Lodge #84, Cape Breton Shrine Club, Royal Order of Jesters and the Lingan Golf and Country Club. He was an original sponsor of the Cape Breton Christmas Daddies Telethon. In 1993 and 2002, Al received the Excellence in Business Award and was inducted into the Cape Breton Business Hall of Fame in 2007. For many years, he was an elder at First United Church, Sydney. In his earlier years, he was an avid golfer and curler.
Al was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Barbara (McCann). They enjoyed many happy hours of boating on the Bras d’Or Lakes, as well as traveling with family and friends. He was predeceased by Barbara in 2018 after 53 years of marriage.
Al is survived by his daughter, Cathy, Vancouver; sons, Dr. David Pace (Renée), St. Johns, NL, Michael (Karen), Sydney and Paul, Sydney. He was a loving grandfather to his six grandchildren, Abbygale, Sarah and Julia Pace, Kyle and Justin Pace and Derrick Dockrill and great-granddaughter, Adrianna Pace. He is also survived by his sister, Ernestine Leahan, Sydney; sisters-in-law, Jane McCann, Halifax and Debbie (Harry) Mattinson, Sydney; and good friend, Debbie Dockrill.
There will be no visitation. Funeral service will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, February 18 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Heather Wright officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Cancer Center at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or a charity of your choice.
