Alice Adams 2020

Alice Adams
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alice Adams (McKay) on Sunday, January 12, 2020 at the Dr. Jim Beveridge Kenora Community Hospice surrounded by family.
Throughout her care in hospital and hospice, Alice had many family and friend visits that helped keep her spirits up and ease her through her illness.
Alice was born on September 13, 1936 in Hamilton, Ontario and raised on the family farm in New Durham where prized Clydesdales and cattle were their livelihood. She had many jobs in her younger years: working on the family farm, at a bank and on a tobacco farm. Her adventurous spirit led her to Kenora. She was making her way out to Calgary to visit family when she read an ad looking for employees for Ball Lake Lodge, a fly in fishing camp. Her intentions were to stay only for one season – that didn’t happen. She worked at the lodge for Barney and Marion Lamb for many years.
In the off season, Alice worked for C. J. School. Her love for kids and belief for family led her to sneak kids out of the school under the guise of a “field trip”. Unbeknownst to school administrators, Jim (dad) would fly the parents from their home communities in his bush plane to meet their kids at the dock and families could visit.
On April 18, 1968, Alice married the love of her life, Jim. Not only did she marry him but with him came six unruly children from ages 2 to 12. A few years later, Jim and Alice bought Portage Lodge where Alice ran the show. There, all the children (plus a few more adopted children) learned the value of hard work – cleaning cabins, guiding, filleting fish, laundry, chopping wood, and interacting with guests. Many stories and memories have been shared over the years of the family’s time at the camp. When the lodge was sold Alice kept busy working for Dunwoody until her retirement. She continued to do books and accounting for various family and friends.
Alice was predeceased by her husband Jim, daughter Dawn Adams, parents, Robert and Betty (nee Elder) McKay, and brother Bob McKay.
She is survived by her children: Howard (Denique), Jami (Dave), Lori (Tim), Jimmy (Sarah) and Gordie (Donna); 18 grandchildren,15 great grandchildren; brother Don (Jo), sisterin-laws Marg McKay and Mary Lou Adams, and various nieces, nephews, and friends. Mom will be remembered for her love of cooking. She delighted in trying out new recipes on family and friends. She had a love of sports namely baseball (Toronto Blue Jays), football (Hamilton Tiger Cats) and curling.
Alice’s door was always open to any and all. Her heart was big enough for all – her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, stray kids and animals, friends from all over the world; her love had no bounds.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses involved in mom’s care. She made mention more than once on your compassion when tending to her. We would especially like to acknowledge the special attention she received from the staff while in hospice care at Pinecrest. In lieu of flowers, and if friends so desire, donations can be make in Alice’s name to
Dr. Jim Beveridge Kenora Community Hospice at Pinecrest Home, 1220 Valley Drive, ON. P9N

A Memorial Service, will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at Alcock Funeral Home in Keewatin, at 11:00 am.
