Adelard’s Obituary
Adelard (Ed, Eddie) Alfred Cayer III
On August 1, 2020, Ed Cayer, loving husband, brother, father, uncle and grandfather passed away at the age of 76. Ed was born on September 4, 1943 in Edmundston, NB. He was a son of the late Marion (Rossignol) and Adelard Cayer of Madawaska, ME. He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Willa Magee; brothers Richard (Ann) of Madawaska, ME and Tim (Brenda) of Hollis, ME; sisters Kathy (Albert) Cayer-Daigle of Coteau du Lac, QC and Karen (Robin) Cayer of Wagon Mound, NM; sons Kirk (Sharon) of Leduc, AB and Chris (Tracey) of Phoenix, AZ; step-daughter, Christiane Magee of Montreal, QC, step-son, Luke (Marie) Seguin-Magee of Stockholm, Sweden; grandchildren: Cheryl (Vancouver), CJ, Kaitlin and Jessica (Leduc), Henry (Montreal), Sebastian and Max (Copenhagen, DK) and Tilja and Ina (Stockholm, SE), Quinn (Phoenix); his nieces Jennifer (Gerold) Ebner-Daigle, Alyson Cayer-Beckett, Ashleigh and Cherie Cayer; and nephews Ken, Stuart, Nathaniel, Kyle and Mackenzie Cayer.
Ed was a graduate of St Francis Xavier University (Economics). He worked in 97 countries mostly during his time in Ottawa at CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency) as Director of Operations in the office of the Vice-President, Bilateral Branch and also during his years as advisor to the President with the International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) in Halifax. He was an international development consultant for years and was the founder of The International Marine Biodiversity Development Corporation, the prime mover in a joint venture with the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Research Vessel Academik Keldysh and the two deep-diving MIR submersibles that dove on the Titanic; and in 1995, he was a founder and Vice-President of Ocean Produce International (OPI) in Shelburne, NS which grew a dwarf seaweed in saltwater tanks in greenhouses. This seaweed contained kainic acid – an amino acid – which was used for neurological research in labs all over the world. Although he retired in 2006, his mind never did. For at least two years, Ed was a consultant to Christine Halef of Halifax. Ms Halef wanted to build a state-of-the-art medical cannabis facility. Ed was instrumental in designing the facility which includes multiple dedicated growing rooms, each with its own custom-designed irrigation, climate control and lighting systems. It is an amazing facility and he was really proud of his contributions. AtlantiCann Medical Inc opened in 2018.
Ed was also a wonderful mentor to several young people who all went on to do great things with their lives.
Ed was, above all, a kind and generous man. Generous with ideas. Generous with his kindness. Generous with his love.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne.
As there are so many travel restrictions these days, there will be no service. However, there will be a Celebration of Life organized by his sisters on August 12, 2020 at 1:00pm EST on ZOOM. If you wish to join the Celebration of Ed’s Life, you need to send a request to cayerconsulting@gmail.com. Anyone who would like to speak or share a story may do so during the Celebration or you can send a story, a memory, a poem or thoughts to the same email above to be integrated into the memorial.
Should you wish to make a donation in memory of Ed, perhaps give to a charity of your choice.
Many thanks to the staff in the ER and ICU at Yarmouth Regional Hospital for all the care they gave to Ed during his last days.
