Pauline Steeves
1942-2019
The world has lost a kind and generous soul. On
Friday evening, November 29, 2019, Clinton Steeves lost his amazing
friend, partner, and sweetheart of 56 years, Pauline Muriel Steeves
(Keith). Danny, Angela, Jamie, and Dawna-Lee lost their loving mother
and greatest teacher.
Raised in the green meadows of Lower Ridge, she spent most of
her very productive life proudly living in Havelock. A great gardener
and historian, she will be remembered for her tireless dedication to
the community.
Pauline attended school in Lower Ridge, Havelock,
and Haverhill, Massachusetts. She worked for the T. Eaton Company,
Canada Post, and behind the scenes for the family highway building
business. She was the coauthor of two local history books. She
travelled extensively, visiting 48 countries, but it was the warm
hospitable people and family members of Devonshire, Bermuda that
captured part of her heart.
Pauline loved to rise early, get started on her
day’s work, and to care for her family. Her 12 grandchildren
knew that breakfast was always on time, a positive word was available
from Grandma, but also that they were expected to be good people. We
will always remember the life lessons, potatoes are good for you,
never waste a raspberry, and a little music in the background makes
everything better. Always whistle if you can.
Born in 1942, she was the daughter of Winston and
Bernice (Black) Keith. She was pre-deceased by her parents, grandson
Quinton Lea, and brothers Reginald and Ralph.
Her loving immediate family cherished every moment with her;
son Danny of Havelock, grandchildren Katrianna (Thomas) Baglole,
Aaron, and Olivia, first great grandchild Ellis, daughter Angela
Stief-Lea (John) of Havelock, grandchildren Izaak, Quinton, and Micah,
son Jamie (Cadre) of Devonshire, Bermuda, grandchildren Sydney,
Zachary, and Kennedy, and daughter Dawna-Lee (Gordon) Coneen,
grandchildren Amelia, Hannah, and Noah.
She is also survived by her brothers Malcolm
(Shirley), Arthur (late Elsie), Connell, and Robin (Denise), and her
sisters Eileen Nash and Ann (Gerald) Dunham.
A strong believer in getting involved, Pauline
dedicated great efforts to the Havelock Women’s Institute,
the Greenhill and Loyalist Cemeteries, and the Kings County Historical
Association. She served as a Commissioner of Oaths, Brownie leader,
and Sunday school teacher. Pauline spent many years involved with the
local Home and School, and later, the PSSC. Over time, the extensive
gardens that she built with her beloved husband Clinton have been
opened to countless graduates, wedding parties, and family gatherings.
A unifying force in her family, nieces, nephews, and anyone who came
through the door were treated to a hot meal and a warm
home.
A private family service will be held, and much
later, a public gathering of remembrance.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Havelock
Greenhill and Loyalist Cemetery Fund would be greatly
appreciated.
