Mary Elizabeth Cowan 19292019

Mary Elizabeth Cowan
1929-2019
Mary Elizabeth Cowan abandoned her
wheelchair at the Kenneth E. Spencer Memorial Home on December 12,
2019. Born on October 26, 1929 in Saint John, NB, to the late Robert
Murray and Mary Addy (Morrill) Cowan, she has been a treasure in our
world.
Upon graduating from nursing at the top
of NB’s class, Mary studied midwifery in Edinburgh, Scotland
before moving to India to work under the Canadian Baptist Missions
Board. After 10 years, recurring bouts of malaria forced her to return
to Canada. When her health allowed, she returned to nursing, this time
in Toronto. When she retired, Mary volunteered at Sunnybrook Health
Sciences Center in the veteran’s wing. Her Dad fought at
Passchendaele and Vimy Ridge and Mary always held our veterans in high
regard.
With the help of techy friends, Mary
pursued her love of genealogy. We benefit from her extensive work and
the records she gifted to us. She mastered any needlework she set her
hand to, enjoyed her camera, the kids in the church family, feasting
on fresh veggies, and her annual summer trips back to
NB.
In December 2016, with the help of
Mary’s Blythwood Road church family in Toronto, and Camden
Park Terrace in Moncton, we moved Mary back to New Brunswick. During
her years at Spencer’s, she reveled in being near her
brother James, and in having nieces, nephews, great and great-great
ones, coming to visit. When we arrived with our pets, she grinned even
more. There was such joy when Sharon brought Hannah Stairs to visit.
Friendships stand the test of time. Mary savored the chapel services,
drinking in precious scripture and blessed by the beauty and power of
familiar old hymns. She loved Jesus. She chose to make the best of
every situation.
Glad to call her «Aunt Mary»
are Paul (Donna) Cowan of New Minas, NS, Beth (Dan) Power of
Salisbury, NB, Barb (Paul) Parker of Stoney Creek, NB, and David
(Tara) Cowan of Rothesay, NB
She follows her parents, her brother
James Cowan and his wife Dorothy, her sister, Hilda Mott and her
husband Robert, and her great-great niece Madeline Joy Power to
GLORY. Home for Christmas!
Resting at Salisbury Funeral Home
(372-4800) from where visitation will be held on Saturday, December
14, 2019 from Noon – 1 pm immediately followed by Funeral
Service at 1 pm in the Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will
be held in Pine Hill Cemetery, at a later date.
If desired, memorials to a charity of
your choice would be appreciated.
