TRASK, (Smith) Hazel Evelyn
The family of Hazel Trask wishes to announce her passing at the age of 89 at The Meadows, Yarmouth, NS, on October 26, 2019 with her loving family at her side. She was born March 29, 1930 in Port Maitland, to Raymond and Florence (Mullen) Smith. She lived all her married life in Sandford, NS where she was active in church, community and school activities, with a passion for genealogy. She published her family history, Our Smiths. She was a member of both the Nova Scotia Colony and the Canadian Society of Mayflower Descendants, the United Empire Loyalists’ Association of Canada and a life member of the Old Beaver River, and Port Maitland Cemeteries Preservation Society.
She taught in the Sandford and Port Maitland Schools. She was an active member of the Sandford United Baptist Church where she served as organist and choir director and worked in children’s programs. She had a Dominion Life membership in the WMS. She loved making connections with everyone she met. Given an opening, she could cite relationships between families for several generations. Hazel was a resourceful homemaker and seamstress, making quilts, and her children’s clothing. Her family knew that her baking, especially her apple pie, was the best around. She loved her family.
Her stroke in 2010 dramatically changed her life. Her Christian faith and her enduring wit and humour carried her through these difficult times. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Herbert Douglas “Doug” Trask, their children Cheryl (Herb), Brian (Kim) and Kendrick (Steve); grandchildren: Ross (Jen), Jane (Chris), Josh (Jessica), Blake (Sam), Hannah (Matthew) and Brett (Alexa) and eight great grandchildren; sister-in-law Elizabeth Landers and brother-in-law Leslie Hicks; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, and siblings Aleen, Henry and Raymond.The family is grateful for the Nova Scotia Home Care which allowed her to live at home for several years after her stroke. Her last years were spent first in Nakile and then The Meadows where Doug joined her as a resident. Deepest thanks go to the staff at The Meadows- Mayflower and Doctors Horton and Chandler who gave her wonderful care.
Visitation is Sunday evening, November 3, 2019 from 6:30 – 8:00 at Sweeny’s Funeral Home in Yarmouth. The funeral service conducted by Pastor Herb Anderson will be held there November 4 at 2 PM, interment to follow in Sandford Cemetery. Join the family at the Sandford United Baptist Church for a time of refreshments after the service.
