Gordon’s Obituary
Malloy, Gordon Kenneth Joseph – 71, of East Green Harbour, Shelburne County, passed away suddenly on Monday December 23, 2019, aboard his lobster-fishing vessel, the Helen & Sylvia, on Ticky’s Shoal, just South of Lockeport Light. Born in East Green Harbour, he was the youngest son of the late John “Jack” Malloy of Jean de Baie, Newfoundland and the late Hannah Jane Enslow of West Green Harbour. Gordie was an avid fisherman his entire life. He began his fishing career at 15, with Ernest Levy on the Robert & Joyce trawl fishing. A few years later he began sword fishing and longlining alongside his older brothers Gary and Maynard Malloy on their respective vessels. In 1983, he bought his own lobster-fishing vessel, the Rhonda and Gerry, and fished out of West Green Harbour with his best friend, Keith Lloyd. In later years his wife served as his first mate and then his brother-in-law Lawrence Townsend until the last day. Gordie loved the life of a fisherman, from the camaraderie of the wharf to the friendships he made with lobster buyers, fellow fishermen and even fishery officers along the way. Dad was as big as life, and his heart followed suit. There was no one who met Dad that didn’t like him, look up to the generous, kind and gentle soul he was, or bask in the boisterous and beautiful laugh that was only his. He enjoyed hunting of all sorts and anxiously awaited the day Robbie would come of age so he could take him along. Dad lived for every moment he could spend with Robbie: camping, swimming, annual family vacations and overnight pillow fights. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Patricia (Townsend), daughter Karla and son-in-law Robert Swansburg, and most importantly grandson and apple of his eye Robbie Swansburg; Shelburne; siblings Gary (Hope) Malloy, Petticodiac, NB; Maynard (Millie) Malloy Mill Village, and Jacqueline Allan, Dartmouth. He was predeceased by his parents; sisters Jean Watson, Loretta Buchanan, Ivy Christie, and Mary Cotter; and mother and father-in-law, Kathleen and Lawrence Townsend. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Homes and Crematorium Ltd. Special thanks to Dr David & Morag Wilson who always made time to see Dad.
