Eunice Jane Hobin, an impressive 100 years young, passed away suddenly in Ottawa on December 24, 2019.
Eunice was born March 29, 1919, in Montreal, Quebec to George and Sarah Jane Conley. Her musical talents as a singer, piano and guitar player began in her younger years as she often sang at many churches, camp meetings, and other special events, and she continued to perform well into her senior years.
She met her husband, Clemence Thomas Hobin (1916-1991) in Shawville, Quebec. They wed in October 1946 in Montreal and settled in Ottawa shortly thereafter. As her family grew, she and Clem were tremendously active in serving in their church, Highland Park Wesleyan [formerly Standard Church] playing piano, singing, teaching Sunday School, and in many other capacities. Her strong faith was a source of comfort and strength throughout her life.
Eunice was known for her cooking, and regularly prepared large Sunday meals for family, friends and visitors. Her pies were particularly renowned and were the centerpiece of family meals right up until her passing. She was also an accomplished seamstress, and worked as a dressmaker, taught sewing lessons at local adult high schools and the Good Companions Senior Centre, and well into her later years did alterations for daughter Earlene’s ‘House of Fashion’ and other special clients and friends. She continued to use her musical gifts to sing at nursing homes to seniors much younger than her. She lived independently in the home in which she raised her family until her death. She strove to be a loving servant to all she encountered.
She is survived by her four children: Ross Hobin and his wife Barbel of Portsmouth, NH, Barry Hobin and his wife Nancy of Ottawa, Jane White and her husband Tim of Brampton, and Earlene Hobin of Ottawa; 10 grandchildren: Jennifer Hobin, Christy Hoffman, Marnie Callahan, Corrie Hobin, Jonathan Hobin, Carolyn Hobin, Thomas White, Shane White, Kaitlin White, and Galen White; and 12 great-grandchildren: Evan Paquin, Alex Paquin, Jeremy Mello, Aaron Mello, Avery Hoffman, Joshua Hoffman, Jonathan Hoffman, Samuel Hoffman, Jacob Callahan, Olivia Callahan, Hunter Callahan, and Anneli Hobin. She will be missed by her extended family, close friends and the community at Highland Park church. Everyone will miss her humour, determination and unshakable faith.
Eunice will be buried on December 28, 2019 in a private ceremony. A celebration of life is planned for Spring. Those wishing, memorial donations to the Highland Park Wesleyan church would be appreciated.
