Antoni Burzynski 2019

Antoni Burzynski
Antoni, (Toni) passed away at home, surrounded by
family, on December 10, 2019. He was in his
97th year. He was the son of Ksenia
and Feliks Burzynski and was born in Traby,
Poland.
At the age of 17, Antoni was caught up in the
German-Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939, and was taken to Russia. He
later escaped to join the Allied forces, making his way to Persia.
There he joined the British Army, and travelled through Jordan,
Palestine, Egypt and then to Durban, South Africa. From
Durban he travelled by sea to Britain, where he was enlisted in the
Royal Navy. He served the rest of the war participating in
convoy protection duty in the North Atlantic. His ship, the
light cruiser ORP Dragon, took part in
the D-Day invasion fleet, firing on Sword Beach, June 6-8, after which
the ship had to return to Portsmouth to repair worn out gun barrels.
The ship returned to the Normandy coast July 7-8 to shell targets
around Caen. On the morning of July 8th,
the Dragon was torpedoed and
sunk. He survived the sinking and was then reassigned to ORP
Conrad and continued to serve with the Royal Navy for several years
after the war, patrolling the North
Sea.
He was granted British citizenship, and attended the
University College of Southampton, where he studied Electrical
Engineering. While there he met Brenda Eagar, and they married in
1951. He spent the next decade working for national power companies,
throughout the United Kingdom, supervising the construction of the
high-tension power grid that aided post war
recovery.
In 1963, the family moved to Canada, briefly to
Moncton, then to Gagnon in remote northern Quebec, where Antoni was
responsible for the electrical systems that operated the large
iron-ore mine. After a year, he moved the family back to
Moncton where he became Instructor of Electrical Technology at the New
Brunswick Institute of Technology, which is now the New Brunswick
Community College. In 1976, he added to his accomplishments, receiving
his Bachelor of Education from the University de Moncton. He retired
in 1988, but continued in his role as an educator for a few years,
teaching mathematics and science in the GED
program.
Antoni’s perspective on life was influenced
by his travels and experiences. He was interested in everything around
him; fishing, gardening, exploring the wilderness, music and painting
were some of his pursuits. He loved mathematics, tinkering with
electronics and mechanical
repairs.
Antoni was predeceased by his wife, Brenda, in 2009.
He will be sadly missed by his children, Michael (Anne Marceau), Susan
(Paul Veroni), Paul, Annemarie (Guy Plint), Mary,
and John (Alysa Treen); his grandchildren Cory and Shane Burzynski,
Trevor and Tessa Plint, and Emma, Maisie and Morgan
Burzynski, and his cousins, nieces, and nephews in Canada, England and
Poland.
The family would like to thank George Lyons for his
constant and thoughtful care and support; caregiver Monique Stiles for
her kindness and devotion during the past two years, and acknowledge
the wonderful care provided by the doctors and nurses and staff of the
Extramural Program, who made it possible for Dad to stay at home
during his illness. In addition, we would like to thank Dr.
Marc Savoie and Dr. Adele Cormier, as well as Dr.
Samantha Gray of the Saint John Regional Hospital Radiation Oncology
Unit and their staff.
According to Toni’s wishes there will not
be a funeral service. There will be a memorial gathering at a later
date. The family invite you to sign the online book of condolence or
